Practical Tips For Common Drainage Problems

By Michelle Howe

Drainage problems can cause significant damages to your property. Hence, it is important to recognize and correct any issues with your Walnut Creek drainage in a timely manner before the problem worsens. Proper identification of all parts in the current drainage system is also much needed to easily distinguish issues when they arise. Create a detailed map of the property that highlights the system surfaces and features.

In addition, you can create structures that can help divert water flows away from your home. This can significantly reduce the potential risks that it poses to your properties. The following are some of the structures that you can install. Although you do not need all of them, installing even just one of the solutions can make a huge difference.

The foundation drains are intended to change the course of water away from the structure's foundations. The drainpipes are perforated so as to allow the passage of water out. This way, the waters are not collected in a single area only. Gravels are usually scattered around the pipes as filters of larger deposits. Alternatively, a thin layer of cloth may also be used.

Using the same principle, the roof drainpipe is designed to divert away water. This time, it aims to protect the roof from excessive water damage. However, it is not perforated, unlike the foundation drains. Moreover, this is connected directly to a dry well, the city's drain system or to a water body. The storm drainpipes are another variant. These can be made from various materials, like aluminum, concrete or polyvinyl chloride.

Meanwhile, the gutters are installed to collect the runoff from the roofs. Stacked up rainwater poses risks of water damage to walls, windows and the roofs. To allow constant passages of water, a downspout is normally used. Unfortunately, the pipes may be blocked by large debris. It is the purpose of the gutters to keep the water system free of fallen leaves and other debris.

Another effective means of preventing blockage is the catch basin. These devices capture the sediments that may clog the drainpipes. After the larger scraps have been filtered out, cleaning becomes much easier. Brooms and rakes are often used to remove dry leaves and other trash caught in the basin's grate.

Similar to catch basins, the yard inlets are also connected to a pipework. This functions similarly, but are much smaller and readily available for installation. You can purchase a plastic or metal yard inlet at any local hardware store. There are DIY kits available, but you can also hire professionals to install the devices.

Setting up cleanouts in strategic areas make it easier to clean up the drainage systems, too. These are easy access points when cleaning the pipelines. They are usually located in bends where the scraps are more likely to clog the system. By gaining access to such areas that could have been difficult to reach, you can clean the entire system more thoroughly.

Finally, you may install sump pumps to avoid water damage. In cases of Walnut Creek drainage failure, waters naturally converge towards the lowest part of the structure. Before this causes water damage, you must pump the water out. However, since the sump pumps use electricity to function, it is only used as a backup system in most cases.
