Defunding Public Education Is Not Necessary

By Jeanette Riggs

When it comes to our nation's future, defunding public education should never happen. Our children are depending on us to provide for their knowledge and skills when they are young. This is so when they grow older, they are ready and available to take over the country. This is the reality. We must face this reality if we are going to prepare these young men and women to take care of us later.

Researching how all of this works is something you can find online. There are also resources in local and university libraries. Many periodicals keep up with this topic as it touches all of us. Stay up-to-date with current events as they will greatly help you stay aware of what is going on in the world. It is part of our responsibility to do this since we live in the world.

Usually, the federal government pays for the funding. If there is not enough there, the state takes over. Taxes pay for it, too. The whole formula for this is really quite complicated. Transporting the children in buses, providing meals, textbooks, and heating during the winter are just a small part of what needs to be funded.

Sports, social clubs, music, art, and paying the teachers are also in the budget. All of these things must be paid. It is unfortunate how the arts get swiped away from the curriculum since music has been known to help children learn and remember facts in their homework and to do better on exams. This has been thoroughly researched, but is undermined when it comes to the money.

We need to help our children become adults. That is where they are headed, obviously so none of this should be overlooked. They will be our teachers in the future, our lawyers, our doctors, and waitresses. All of these occupations need a worker who has had an education. This means that none of the curriculum should be left out.

Investing in this is so important. It shows that we care and if they know that, they will excel even more. Money needs to be saved and spent for this endeavor. Every effort should be made to find and make the money necessary for this. Fundraisers should be explored as this can help raise the revenue necessary. Bake sales have been known to work in the past.

Inequality should not exist in the system. Children should not be compared to each other according to how much money their parents make. That is just ridiculous. If one area is more wealthy while another is low-income, the schools should still reflect the same curriculum and opportunities that all schools have. Residential segregation should not determine this.

Defunding public education is a cruel thing to do. It will set many children up to fail. Truancy and delinquency will become more a part of these children's lives if school money is taken away. It is hard enough in today's world for children to keep up. Helping our society long term will only benefit everyone.
