Where To Study

By Franklin Skribbit

A double major can be challenging because you are basically doing two different degrees. You are also trying to get your general required classes done at the same time which can cause conflicts with class scheduling. There is also the factor of being able to learn and excel in two different fields of study or ones that are slightly related to each other. It can also be overwhelming because you are trying to balance a number of different courses and usually require a larger case load. Some argue that having a double major will show that you have developed more skills, and that you are versatile. It also can open up opportunities to those seeking internships where more than one type of study or skill is required.

First, you should look for the people around you that are going to be able to help you throughout your time in school. You should make sure that you have people that you can talk to when you get stressed or frustrated about your schooling.

Although the above argument does have some good points regarding the increased knowledge base that a double major student has; the amount of time and increased tuition cost should be considered before choosing this path. There is no real proof that completing a double major will put you ahead in the job market or make you a better candidate.

Also you are essentially paying for two degrees and in most cases doing both majors at the same time. This means that you need to go to college year round, and this will make it so you have little or no time to work a part-time or full-time job while in school. You also need to consider that this option will cost more money up front and be more demanding. This can have an even greater impact at universities that have higher tuition costs. Many students doing a double major end up having more student loan debt, and in the end they have only obtained a bachelor's degree; which is quickly becoming not enough for many companies and careers.

One of the main suggestions for students considering a double major is to shift towards a minor instead. There are a lot of advantages to doing a minor especially considering all of the challenges of doing a double major. One of the main advantages is that you can choose a different subject of interest and minor in it but you are not devoting your whole college study towards it along with your other chosen major. Colleges in Boise offer minors as a substitute and encourage them over double majoring. It makes it so you can still develop skills without paying a higher tuition and going to school year round to keep up with the double major schedule.

It is also important to note that if you do a double major you may not have a chance to conduct research in your main field of study during your junior and senior years. You will also have a tough time fitting in any extracurricular activities. Another option might be doing a study abroad which would give you a different feel from your major and satisfy your studies elsewhere. This is good because you can still get college credit while you travel and you get to do something new that can still look good on a resume.
