Using sign language and picture cards is also an effective option.

Children that suffer from apraxia will also have their ability to communicate adversely affected. They will thus also need to undergo treatment. Apraxia makes it difficult for the affected to pronounce certain syllables and also to make sounds. The affected child will know what they want to say without being able to bring it out in the right way.

One of the tests used is oral motor assessment used for purposes of checking weaknesses in jaw muscles, muscles of the tongue and those of the lips. There also is a melody of speech assessment in which the therapist listens out to ascertain if the child is able to stress certain syllables, plus their ability to use pitch and pauses well. Children that suffer from apraxia will be required to go for speech therapy on a one-on-one basis several times every week. They are assisted to properly understand auditory feedback, plus visual and touch cues. This can be done in several ways. For once, the child will be required to look into the mirror when they talk. The other option is to record them and let them listen after that. These will bring about improvements.

Most of the treatments are time consuming and that is why parents are usually required to help with treatment. There are exercises assigned to parents to help the children with from home. This shortens the learning process.

Stuttering is also a condition that needs to be treated. It is a condition that starts during childhood but may develop during adulthood as well. People that stutter are taught behavioral modifications that in turn control the stutters. Most importantly, the individuals have to be taught to control their rate of speaking.
