GPSs are available in a variety of options that are utilized differently. These systems have the potential to track and give the real-time data pertaining to every place where the person or vehicle of interest is. Since there are various types of GPS hardware available, knowing them is essential to enable you choose the best one.

Laptop-based systems come with a packaged receiver, map and software loaded into a hard drive. The map allows the operator to navigate through pattern of the area where the person or vehicle being monitored is. The receiver for this unit is attached with serial ports or USB that connects it to the laptop. The great thing with this unit is that, it allows the operator to use their laptop CPU power, memory and hard disk to manage their navigation work.

Sports and training units are made portable to be worn on the wrist or any other part of the body where the user feels comfortable. These devices come with various components among which are: calorie count monitors, lap or racing timers, virtual partner and heart rate monitors. The recent models are integrated with PC software to enable the user to plan and analyze their workout statistics.

Other popular types are the portable systems that are used to store limited amount of data. Portable units have specific disks and drives that can only store specific amount of data. Most of these disks and drives are SD cards, CD ROMs and fixed memory. These devices come with other different types of parts such as audio books, picture viewers, Bluethtooth incorporation, xm satellite radio services and MP3 playback storage memory.

Basic units are also common that work by reporting the location data inform of longitudes and latitudes. The devices are designed with small memory capacity and processor. Due to their limited storage capacity and basic features, they are mostly used for basic navigation reasons especially for fun and education activities.

You would also find the PDA systems that consist of the same components as a PC. These devices work differently as some of them use mobile operating mechanisms while others use palm OS software. To guarantee their performance, these systems should be cooperated with an add-on module for monitoring and recording the data.

You can also choose the portable In-dash or add-on units. These two operate differently even though each of them would come with a car power charger, suction cup that would connect your system to the car screen and an external antenna. The add-on unit can be disconnected while the In-dash unit cannot.

Different global positioning systems are made to be used for different purposes. Different systems are also created in different ways and with different components. It is for this reason that you need to know the various types available in order to determine the best one that suits your need. When choosing, you would need to determine how you want to be using it since this would enable you to enjoy the benefit of purchasing the right product for the right purpose.
