How A Spill Containment Berm Can Help Prevent Environmental Catastrophes

By Leanne Goff

Modern society depends upon all types and kinds of chemicals to survive. Unfortunately, most of these are potentially harmful to the environment and even to human health. That is why it is so vital to take every precaution when handling or transporting these toxins and chemicals. It is imperative to be prepared for accidents and a spill containment berm is one of the most important first line defenses.

Having the right equipment to prevent the spreading of pollution, however, is only the very first step in dealing with a problem. Having the proper equipment at hand can do much to help prevent spills from spreading. The next steps are important too. It is necessary to make sure that the pollutants are neutralized, removed from the site and transported to a site that is properly equipped to dispose of the hazardous materials.

Once the pollutants have been contained, the most important priority is the make sure that the toxins are rendered harmless. Luckily, scientific advances have been made and there are now extremely useful agents that can be used to absorb pollutants or to accelerate the natural bio degrading process. Of course, this will only be effective if the pollutant is bio degradable in the first instance.

One of the most exciting new developments is an agent that not only absorbs the pollutant, but also renders it useful in the manufacture of products that are used in the manufacture of rubber and asphalt products. In this way costs are minimized because the resultant mass left after the clean up of a pollution incident can be used productively and even profitably.

Unfortunately there are many chemicals and toxins that are not able to respond to agents that encourage bio degrading or even absorbency. In such cases the only solution is to separate the pollutants from the environment and to then vacuum the poison into containers. The containers are then transported to facilities that are equipped to deal with the matter in a safe and efficient manner.

It is a sad fact that the cleaning and management of chemical and toxic spills are both time consuming and extremely expensive. Most governments, both local and national, have therefore developed protocols whereby incidents are prioritized. Pollution at remote sites or at coastal sites where there is strong wave activity is not seen as a priority. Heavily populated areas, tourism hot spots and environmentally sensitive areas receive the highest priority.

Any company that deals with potentially hazardous material is subject to many rules and regulations. It is imperative that the proper equipment is available at all times because an accident can happen at any time. It is equally important to make sure that there are procedures and policies in place. If an accident occurs, everybody must know his or her role in dealing with the issue.

Pollution is bad news for all concerned, including the environment. It is imperative that spills are limited as soon as possible and as effectively as possible. A spill containment berm can do much to help achieve this aim. Of course, it would be better to prevent such catastrophes altogether.
