Requirements To Obtain EMDR Certification

By Eugenia Dickerson

There are many options available if your intention is to make use of EMDR as a section of your practice. If you currently do not have experience in this specialty, it will be necessary for you to start the program with the Basic program, before you can make application for EMDR certification.

Upon completion of the basic training, you can continue on to EMDR certification. There are certain criteria you have to meet to become eligible for EMDR certification. To apply for the certificate, you have to submit proof that you have completed the Basic Training program. A copy of a certificate of completion is required to be attached to your application.

The application requires proof of registration or certification in the professional mental health field. You have to provide copies of documents to indicate that you have the facility to practice independently.

Applicants need to prove that they have at least 2 years' experience in their chosen practice field. This should be relevant to the specialty indicated on your license or certificate as a professional. The documentation that is provided to this effect should be notarized as proof of the specialism in your field. If you do not possess such documentation, you may write out the required statement regarding the two years of experience and the written acknowledgement should be notarized.

You should have conducted a minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with a minimum of 25 clients. This pre-requisite requires documentation to prove that you have this experience and the documents should be notarized. Once again, you do have the opportunity to write that you have fulfilled this requirement and have that particular document notarized accordingly. It is possible for you to combine your two years' experience and minimum sessions' declaration and have it notarized as a single document.

It is necessary for you to have undergone a minimum of 20 hours' consultation with an Approved Consultant in EMDR. Your consultant should be able to provide you with required documentation for this purpose. The documentation needs to list the hours you received in individual consultation and the hours you received in group consultation. If you received these hours from more than one consultant, you need to acquire the necessary documents from the different consultants.

It is required that 10 of those hours should be for individual consultations and the remaining may be from small group consultations. The group numbers are not to be more than 8 individuals at a time. These hours pertain to the number of hours after you completed your Basic Training program.

To obtain your EMDR certification, you have to attach letters of recommendation from Approved Consultants regarding your use of EMDR whilst in the consulting relationship. Your colleagues or peers should provide you with letters of recommendation with regards to the use of the service in your professional practice. An additional requirement is to provide certificates related to the completion of 12 hours of further education in the field. The basic program does not fall into this category. There are approved training programs that are available after the basic training that will fall into this category.
