The Works Of Award Winning Authors

By Marcia Marks

Reading is a wonderful way to spend some free time. Many people now use their wireless tablet to download the latest books to read when they are travelling. It is always a good idea to look around for works by award winning authors. These can be in a huge variety of fields, from travel and politics to mystery and fiction.

Buying a book for a child is a wonderful idea. Reading is a skill that should be encouraged from a young age. In fact even a very young child will enjoy having a story read to them. When shopping for good books parents should look out for Caldecott Medal winners. These are stories that have been voted winners by a very experienced committee. No only are they masterfully written but the illustrations are also outstanding. This combination of words and pictures produces an irresistible combination that will have any child enthralled.

One of the best known of contemporary children's writers is Jane Yolen. She bases many of her stories in the harsh beauty of the New England landscape. It is often the landscape that serves as an integral part of the story. Parents and children will love to own a copy of the 1988 Caldecott Medal winning Owl Moon. This heart warming story tells of family, its traditions and roots on a bleak but beautiful farm. The elements of nature are also a great asset of this book.

The Pulitzer Prize is also awarded for fiction literature every year. The winners list includes some world famous American writers including the legendary Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway is much more than just an author, he really is an icon. His personal life was every bit as colorful as his literary work and his books still attract attention today. It was his work titled The Old Man and the Sea that won the prize in 1953. Most of Hemingway's work remains in print today and continues to receive excellent reviews.

The Pulitzer Prize for literature is awarded every year to an outstanding work of fiction. Many classic books are past winners of this honor. Writers often focus on social injustices or issues for their books. Not only are readers treated to a compelling narrative, they also get a new take on the problems faced by many of their countrymen.

Steinbeck's work helped to emphasize the plight of the lower working class people who had nothing and no one to fall back on. The lack of government support for these people became instrumental in forming social welfare programs throughout the country many of which are still in effect today.

Social injustice is a huge theme in writing and many of the award winning authors have tackled these difficult subjects. Harper Lee's 1961 winner To Kill a Mockingbird is the perfect example of an outstanding story that brings racial difficulties into the public eye.

Hemingway is one of a long list of award winning authors who's books are still as valuable today as when they were first written. The messages they convey are those of human struggles and conflict. People today can still relate to those issues.
