Considerations When Purchasing A Used Toyota

By Crystal Maloney

Because Toyotas are a brand that holds value well, they are somewhat more expensive to purchase as pre-owned vehicles. However, most used Toyota owners contend that the price is well worth it. Knowing how to purchase whatever car you choose smartly is important, so think about it beforehand.

The reason that Toyotas tend to be more expensive when they are older is because they tend to have longer running lives. While another brand might need more repairs than it is worth after ten years, many Toyotas run into their late teens and twenties. Keep this in mind when comparing pricing between brands.

Pre-owned vehicles can be purchased from three main sources. Dealers sell both warrantied, certified pre-owned vehicles and those without any such guarantees. Private parties also sell their cars to each other. Each of these sources has benefits and potential costs.

You pay for the warranty that comes with a certified pre-owned vehicle. These are the most expensive option. However, they have been checked over, are in working condition with any necessary repairs having been made, and provide you with a warranty. The cheapest option is usually a private party sale, but these have no such guarantees and rely on both seller and buyer being honest.

If you do choose to purchase a vehicle from a private party, ask if you can have a trusted mechanic look it over before you buy it. You will have to pay for this inspection, of course, but it will be well worth it to make sure you aren't wasting your money. Don't buy a car if the seller doesn't agree to this, as he or she is probably hiding something.

Being smart when purchasing a used Toyota means you are more likely to be happy with your purchase. Although a little more expensive initially, you will usually get a lot more time and miles out of these cars than other pre-owned options. Most people who choose Toyotas are very happy with their choice.
