Choosing The Right Floor Covering

By Lorri Fast

The real challenge when deciding the best flooring for your home is to choose one that will add to the overall value of your home. A reasonable well maintained floor accentuates your home and helps to bring the beauty of your rooms to the surface. For the home owner determining the flooring which will best serve each room can often be a challenge.

The first consideration that you should think about is the room itself. What will the room be used for? Then consider the advantages and disadvantages of the different styles of flooring which are available. Most people consider their budget as their first consideration, followed by the practicality of the flooring, their taste, and anesthetics.

Another question to ask yourself is, what is your lifestyle? Do you have children? Do you have pets? If so, then perhaps plush rugs in the lighter colors would not be the best option for you. Family rooms where you enjoy spending time, may not be the best option for this type of flooring. If your family room doubles as a game room where your family and pets spend a lot of time, perhaps the shorter darker carpeting would be a better option. Be practical, especially if your lifestyle does not allow for a lot of time to care for your home and carpets.

You might also want to take under advisement the architectural features along with the period design of the rooms. In addition, think about the varying humidity that will be in the room and whether there is enough heat and light to readily dry the rugs if you're considering doing that. In the bath and the kitchen, quite often humidity can be a real issue. Keeping a damp floor for a longer period of time allows for the growth of mold and mildew, both of which can cause real problems in the home.

Once you have decided what kind of flooring you think would be most suitable for your home, you will need to consider the kind of look you would like to present. If you are considering a laminate flooring, your options are definitely wide open. There are so many different looks available that you may find it hard to decide. The look of a hardwood floor is one option but then you can also choose the tile look. The same holds true with the vinyl tile.

When using tile or patterned flooring, your room and personal taste in design options can make the decision making hard. The hardest part will be deciding on a color and then settling on the kind of pattern or texture.

The same process is used if you are choosing carpet. First you need to decide do you prefer plush carpet or a low pile carpet. This decision will be based on the type of room you are going to redo. After choosing the type of carpet, add the choices of color which you will consider. Once you have narrowed your options, you will find it easier to choose when you arrive at the store.

Options include:

Hardwood flooring is actually suitable for most any room. The practicality of this flooring is that it is extremely sturdy. Hardwood flooring may require more care if used in a high traffic area.

Carpet-plush or slender in nature, the carpet that you purchase will allow you a very broad range of choices in texture, color and length of pile as well as in different perks such as scotch guarding to keep the flooring cleaner.

Tile-Tile comes in ceramic or vinyl and can be installed in a minimal of time. The tile can be cut to fit into smaller areas or used to cover larger areas.

Carpeting continues to be very popular. It comes in such a wide range of colors, textures, and length of pile. Scotch guarding your carpeting will help it to keep clean longer. .

The choice in flooring today is literally endless. Remember to take into consideration all the different aspects of the room prior to making your choice of flooring. Choose the flooring you believe will be the most usable and the most practical for your home, but yet will add the most value.
