High New York City Common Core Standards

By Rena Hudson

Education is a huge concern for people all over the country. Falling standards over the past few years have caused concern all the way from Washington D. C. To individual family homes. People are wondering why students are falling behind. With all these concerns in mind, the New York City common core standards were put into place with the aim of creating a curriculum that serves all students.

Inner city schools have to deal with numerous problems, including a high percent of students who speak English as a second language. Often school to home communication is very challenging. Special programs have to be put into place to address these issues and ensure that every child gets a fair chance in school.

It has taken several years of discussion and debate to arrive at the new standards. Every care has been taken to create a well rounded and balanced educational approach. Throughout 2010 work continued to put together a common standard for English language arts, mathematics, history and social studies and science and technology. The benchmarks are in line with post secondary expected outcomes.

The new standards went into place in 2010 and right away many states issued their commitment to the new initiative. New York was one of the states to enthusiastically adopt the new measures and join the national Race to the Top. Each state also has the option to raise the bar by an additional 15% in any area. This allows them to meet the needs of the most high achieving students and offer them even more challenging work.

It is very clear that the needs of all students will be served by the new plan. This includes English as a second language students, as well as those with disabilities. Gifted children will also be challenged under the new programs. Those who are struggling will receive extra help to give them every possible opportunity to attain the highest standard they can.

Standards have been carefully developed beginning at the first grade level. Young students will be taught an exciting and comprehensive curriculum that has a clear set of desired outcomes. English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and technology are all addressed. The language arts section will focus on basic skills such as recognizing the characters, plot and meaning of a story.

The achievement levels begin in first grade. Students are expected to be familiar with stories and fables as part of the English language arts curriculum. They should be able to identify the characters, plot and setting of the story as well as recognize and understand the moral. The typical who, where, why, when and what questions should also be addressed as part of the first grade work. This creates a strong basis on which to build as the children get older and move on to more complex work.

New York City common core standards are designed to help all students prepare for college and the work place. A good solid academic foundation is necessary to become a well rounded person. The new initiatives should give the education system the help it needs to move forward and succeed.
