Basic Information About Freelance Copy Writer

By Michelle Howe

Copy writing involves writing text for advertising or marketing of a person, idea, opinion, business or product. The goal is to persuade readers of this text to subscribe to a particular viewpoint or purchase a product that is being advertised. The professionals who do this job are given the title of copy writers. An individual who does not work for a particular business but operates independently is known as a freelance copy writer.

Such writers are given a range of tasks. Usually they are given work related to online ads, tagline development, web page content, television or radio scripts, social media, catalogs, brochures, direct mail pieces, billboards, press releases, sales letters, white papers and more. Basically, the professionals are primarily concerned with communication when it comes to marketing.

Content written specifically for websites is done with the purpose of increasing ranking on results pages for search engines. This is referred to as organic SEO, also called search engine optimization. This process involves the strategic repeating of certain key phrases or words throughout a site. This is done in a manner that the text reads normal and casual to viewers.

Generally speaking, such professionals work for organizations such as large stores, cable and broadcast providers, newspapers, advertising departments in companies, PR firms, magazines, ad agencies and book publishers. However, a freelancer is considered an independent contractor. These individuals do freelance jobs for an assortment of clients, which may include special agencies that offer writing services, as well as layout, fact checking, proof reading, social media consultation, SEO, development editing, design and other such services.

Whether these professionals do freelance jobs or are employed, they often work with others to form a creative group. Often these writers work with art directors. They are responsible for the textural and verbal content produced and telling stories that produce certain emotional responses. On the other hand, art directors are focused on the visual communication aspect of a project and may be assigned to do oversight of the entire production.

This position is very similar to that held by technical writers. In fact, it is common for these two jobs to overlap in their duties. Technical writing, in broad terms, is centered on giving readers information and not persuading. So, while copy writers are given the assignment of writing an advertisement to sell a vehicle, technical writers are drafting the operating manual for said vehicle.

The Internet has greatly expanded the opportunities for this position. Emails, web content and other online media require such services. The web has also made it easier for these writers to learn the skill, view work of competitors and conduct research. Furthermore, employers and potential workers can easily connect through the web. Technology has also increased the amount of freelancing work available, making this a competitive field, especially in certain markets and specialties.

Copy writing is a powerful tool when it comes to marketing. Professionals in this field are usually involved with producing text that can be used for marketing and ad purposes. People may work for a company or agency. A freelance copy writer is an individual who contracts out his or her own jobs and essentially works independently. Internet popularity has led to an increase of opportunities in this field and made it quite competitive.
