A Stump Grinding Service Explained

By Michelle Howe

For whatever reasons people often choose to cut down their own trees. Perhaps they are old and disease ridden, or maybe they have grown too large or are too close to the house. One thing that people tend to take into consideration is what are they going to do with the base of the tree that they are left with. Some that have given this some thought beforehand have already contacted a stump grinding service.

If left, the only thing that will grow there will be some fungi. Not only that the root system will still be alive. It will still be sending up shoots hoping that these will turn into trees, or it could be damaging sidewalks. There is only one surefire way to stop this happening, and it is something that the normal man on the street would not know how to do.

Going back in years, or even to a more rural location, there were several ways of dealing with this task. One thing that they all had in common was digging beneath the root network, so they were quite labor intensive. The first way was to use explosives and blast them out. So possibly a non-starter in a residential setting.

Fires were also built beneath them, and the blackened remains were then hauled away. With so many areas being smokeless zones today, this is also probably not viable. So that could also be discounted from the list of possibilities.

The final approach involved wrenching the whole lot from the ground. Ropes or chains would be securely affixed to the tree's base. Then utilising something like a tractor, or even horses the network of roots were cut through as the stump was slowly pulled from the ground.

Any of the above mentioned methods were time consuming. They also tended to leave large problem areas which would need attention afterwards. So although they would get the job done, they are seemed to create just as many problems as they solved.

One thing that a professional company will be able to tell you straightaway is whether that bit of tree needs to remain. It might be holding an embankment in place with its root system. In which case it can be cut quite low to the ground so that it isn't obvious. Sympathetic planting will also help to further mask the problem.

Nowadays everything involves time, and the average person wants as little disturbance to their routines as possible. At the end of the day the want the remains dealt with as quickly as possible. One way is to have it ground down to below the surface. The wood chips that result from this grinding can be used as a mulch in the customer's own garden.

Consequently more and more people are electing to use a professional stump grinding service. They have the machinery and the know how. They can get into areas of limited access, they don't need to park a vehicle right at the site. These companies know what they are doing, and they do it quickly and efficiently.
