Be A College Guru With These Tips!

By Austin Southwood

Does college strike fear in your heart? Are you unsure of how to proceed? Many new students, fresh from high school, feel great pressure. You can enjoy your time at college without letting it get to you. With the following advice, you can get the most from your college years. There is no one to wash your clothes and feed you anymore. Make sure you eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and keep yourself and your surroundings clean. Try to make a schedule that includes classes, study, recreation and caring for yourself properly. Unhealthy food and stress can make you ill.

Keep yourself properly hydrated throughout the day. This is important, as it will reduce the groggy feeling that you have and will help to flush out the toxins from your system. This can really help in improving your mood and your brain, which are both important for success in college.

It's important to get familiar with the teachers you have when you start your classes. For starters, write down their office hours and location. You can also use your student email to contact them. You should build a good relationship with them so they will be willing to help you with issues you may have. Hang around with people that approach college similarly. Surrounding yourself with people who are determined to succeed will help you stay motivated to succeed also. You can still have fun, though! Look for people who have a healthy balance in their life.

Go to school using the bus. You might discover the commute is not any longer than by driving. Besides, you will not have to waste time looking for a parking spot. You can also save gas money. It is also great for the environment. Prior to the day that classes begin, become familiar with your schedule as well as the location of your classes. Time yourself to get a feel for how quickly you'll have to walk to get from class to class. If you have a map, use it to mark important points like restrooms and ATMs.

Try not to become distracted by romantic interests. This may be a problem if you have never been away from home before. The most important thing is getting a proper education. You can date, but don't let it take over all of your time. You don't want your studies to suffer because failing is expensive in the long term. Participate in at least one internship during college. An internship gives you a chance to experience what life can be like after you graduate from college. If things go well, you may even be offered a job. Check with your advisor to learn what department handles internships at your school.

Never party hard the night before a test. Staying out too late can cause you to be stressed and tired on test day, and it can result in lower grades. Your grades should always take precedent over your social life.

Prior to purchasing textbooks on campus, check online sources. As long as you're getting the books on time from the online vendor, you can get things from the Internet a lot cheaper than on campus. This is true for new texts and also used ones.

You can meet lots of people by taking advantage of orientation social events. Most of you are in the same boat and do not know anyone on campus yet. When you start forming relationships quickly, you'll feel great. Be realistic when making your work and course schedules. If you aren't a night person, don't schedule night classes or labs. Know your natural body clock and adapt your schedule to flow with that as much as possible.

Always arrive to class on time. It is vital that you know what time your classes are and how soon you have to leave to get there. Professors can be quite prickly about students who constantly interrupt their class by arriving late. Its not good to get on a professors' bad side!

Make sure you take breaks occasionally. Studying too much may burn you out. Life is about balance. If you consider yourself a perfectionist, it is tough, but breaks are a healthy habit to get into.

Your teacher provides you with office hours to contact them for a reason. Don't suffer quietly if you're having trouble with a class. The office hours offer a great opportunity to get some one on one tutoring from a person who's well-qualified for free. Do not rely how how you did in high school. The people you meet in college won't really care about your past high school accomplishments. Push yourself to the limit, as this will help you to reach your potential.

You should go through a few semesters of school if you are feeling weary about it, give it a chance. Many students get homesick or feel that they made a mistake because it's a different experience from anything they may have ever encountered before. If you find that your college is not right for you as the year ends, consider transferring to one that is better suited to your needs. If you are continuing your education and have a child, you think living on campus is simply a dream and can't be done. This may not be the case. Many colleges offer family housing. Universities and colleges are finally starting to realize that not all students are recent high school graduates. Inquire about housing for families early since it can become full rather quickly.

Always turn off your phone during class. Other students are there to learn and not be interrupted or distracted. It is very distracting when a cell phone goes off in class. Also, it's not cool to text while in class. Your constant texting can be just as distracting as the phone ringing. Leave your phone in your bag or pocket during class.

You will see in the future how your hard work has paid off as you find success at a career and lifestyle that inspires you. Never stop or allow yourself to become overly discouraged. You have everything you need to fulfill your potential!
