Eighty Two - Create Fear In Gothic Halloween Costumes

By Logan Jacobs

Gothic Halloween costumes are perfect for everyone. Why? Because they can be anything and everything. Dress up your every day attire, or choose a theme to add a few Gothic accents. The creative flexibility is enormous when it comes to Gothic Halloween costumes.

This style calls for thick dark lines around the eyes and black or blood red lipstick. Pale makeup on the face adds a pallor that highlights the lined eyes, shadowed cheeks and dark lips. Jewelry is pewter or tarnished silver and tends toward crosses, stars and studs. The word "pretty" doesn't exist when your are dressing in Gothic Halloween costumes.

Adding some shapes or designs on your face using both black and dark blue or red is often a Goth signature. Add small stars flowing from the outside of your eyes or on the temples. More elaborate details might be free flowing lines bracketing your painted mouth or flowing up the face into the hairline. If you arms are bare add fake tattoos or draw ugly vines that curl up your arm and around your neck. Dingy, dark and depressing are the traits of Gothic Halloween costumes.

Adding blue or red to the liner around the eyes is a stylized version of Gothic Halloween costumes. Use minimal color - just enough to add a highlight - or create streaming lines or blotches of dark color across your face. Horizontal lines crossing your face into the hairline or verticals running down from your eyes will draw attention.

Victorian clothing is a good model for choosing Gothic Halloween costumes. The night disguises and vampire dress we often think of as Victorian can be found in ready-made costumes of all sizes. Goth attire may be long, dark and flowing or be in the style of an old time undertaker. Choose a character that suits you.

Torn garments or fishnet stockings with runs and holes add to the overall effect. Leg or arm warmers (dark and raggedy, of course), touches of dingy lace or studded collars are great accessories. Anything in leather is perfect for Gothic Halloween costumes. Leather dog collars with studs and wide leather wrist bands are standard Gothic wear.

Depending on your total costume your foot wear may or may not be visible to viewers. Shoes will be dark in color and combat boots or any clunky black boot is a good choice. Sneakers or light colored shoes will destroy the impression of the total costume so leave them in the closet for a Gothic Halloween. For ladies who are showing a lot of leg, combat boots might be replaced with black stiletto heels. Shoes or boots with straps, chains, buckles or studs are perfect for Gothic wannabes.

You can turn almost any character into a Gothic Halloween costume that will be the ""evil twin"" of a famous person. When in doubt about your dress for trick or treat - "gothify" it. For a simple fast costume choose your own black clothing and just add accessories. Spike or shag your hair. With a few accessories and stylish makeup you can become your own evil twin.
