Peers Tutoring Training And Its Rewards

By Linda Ruiz

To be able to help students who are having difficulties with specific subjects, most educational institutions would seek the help of other students. These individuals usually are around the same age, even classmates, of those who requires further assistance. The individuals who will be helping usually excel in the subjects that others have difficulties with.

Peer tutoring programs have been commonly used by schools. Peer tutors help other students pass their subject and learn a lot as well. To be able to become a peer tutor, one must undergo peers tutoring training. This training will aid them on how to go about imparting their knowledge to those they are tutoring.

The tutor should not be late in starting his tutoring session. He should also be patient when dealing with the tutee. He should also have a comprehensive knowledge with regards to the subject matter he will be reinforcing. Effective and clear communication should be observed by both tutor and tutee. The mentor should also achieve the aim of the program which is to make the tutee pass the subject by improving his grades.

Several techniques can be acquired from the orientation. These techniques can be used to manage the tutee. He will also have the opportunity to learn new things himself. Since this is the case, he will also be able to improve his own knowledge while sharing the knowledge that he already has to the other student.

Different people have different personalities. He needs to teach the subject to the tutees whether he likes their personalities or not. Professionalism will be displayed during these encounters. Because of this, the tutor will become more mature not only in handling the said students but also in dealing with other aspects his daily life.

There are some students who display unacceptable behaviors. With this, the orientation is geared toward letting the mentor perform steps that will allow him to diminish these conducts. He will enable himself to demand respect from the tutees even if force is not utilized.

Also, there are tutees who would think that their tutors will have to do their homework for them. This should not be the case as the tutors are there only to help reinforce learning. They should not be the ones doing the homework. The purpose of peer tutoring will be lost if the mentor does the homework of a tutee by himself. The orientation will provide steps on how to make their tutees understand these matters.

Since individuals have different kinds of cultural and familial backgrounds, he needs to respect each and every one of them. The orientation will train him on how to handle these students. It is expected that he will be able to handle them without categorizing them.

The benefits presented are obtainable when one undergoes a tutors training. The tutee should feel that the tutor is always there for him. For this reason, a sense of pride and accomplishment will be felt by the tutors especially if their tutees improve their grades with their assistance.
