General Information Regarding MCAT Tutoring

By Harriet Porter

Medical College Admission Test, also known as MCAT, is the name of a standardized test. This computer-based exam is taken by aspiring medical students in the United States of America and Canada. Known for its difficulty, many people opt for MCAT tutoring as part of their preparation process.

Overall, the test is meant to analyze knowledge of various concepts and principle, critical thinking, written analysis and problem solving. It includes questions related to biological science, verbal reasoning and physical reasoning. This is a necessary step in the medical school admission process for those in Canada or America.

Before August 2006, this was a paper-and-pen test. In January of 2007, all administrations made the switch to make this a computer-based exam. This test is very important to students. Many of which are undergraduates in their junior or senior years of college. They take the MCAT prior to applying for medical school.

The test may take between four and five hours to finish. There are many different centers where these can be taken all year long. Physical science or PS, biological science or BS, verbal reasoning or VS and a trial section, which is optional, are the four main areas of this exam. All questions and passages are predetermined. This means that every person takes the exam of the same difficulty, regardless of their performance as they go along.

In the PS portion, there are more than 50 questions to be answered in approximately 70 minutes. VR is to be completed within an hour and consists of 40 questions. The biological sciences part of the test includes more than 50 questions and should be completed within 70 minutes as well. Those taking the option trial section have 45 minutes to complete a little more than 30 questions.

Results of this test mean a lot for students that are interested in going to medical school. For this reason, many seek tutoring help. These services are offered through many and can be beneficial for those wanting to gain more confidence about their knowledge and understanding of concepts included on this exam.

There are test preparation companies, sample tests, textbooks, MCAT prep books and free online resources to help. Regardless of one's confidence about passing with a good score, students are encouraged to make use of the available resources. There is no limit to the amount of times pre-medical students are allowed to take the MCAT exam, although not getting good scores the first time around could delay the process of completing schooling and beginning one's career.

Private tutoring is offered through many facilities and companies. The cost of these services will vary based on many factors. Still, this kind of one-on-one help can be positive for students. The services might be offered in-person or online. Sometimes they come with packages that include extra benefits, including access to more study materials and related resources. Seek out a program that is available in your region that best matches your learning style and budget. This tutoring help could help a person pass with his or her desired score the first time around and avoid a retake.
