Why Low Bids Can Equal Low-Quality Design

By Vickie Daeley

Saving money is always a good idea, but when it comes to home design, it's often best to spend more money upfront rather than settle for sub-par contractors who offer you the lowest bid. You might be tempted to go for the lowest cost option, but rarely does that produce the quality look you are seeking.

So often, we meet people who settled for that low bid and ended up with a disaster that looks more like a nightmare than the design of their dreams. Their contractor promised them the moon and stars, but didn't deliver and while it might have cost less, the money was wasted on a poorly executed design and more money was spent later to fix the problems.

Be wary of the low bid, especially is it is substantially lower than other contractors. There might be some difference in cost based upon the type of work and the experience level of the contractor, but often a low bid comes in from someone who isn't qualified to take on the job in the first place and sometimes doesn't even have a proper license. They hope you will forget about their shortcomings in order to save some cash.

Often we are flying blind when selecting a contractor which is why it makes better sense to simply hire a good interior designer and let them handle the process of contractor selection. After all, these design professionals not only know how to transform the look of your home on paper but they also can make this design a reality. Plus, they already know a myriad of top contractors for virtually any type of job, so you don't have to waste time fretting over whether or not you picked a good contractor.

We all want to get our money's worth, but you shouldn't approach hiring a decorator as if it is just an extra expense. It could be the best way to make sure each penny you spend has been utilized in the best possible way. A designer can stick within your budget, while finding you great deals on furnishings, light fixtures, appliances, decorative items, flooring and much more.

So don't be fooled by the lowest bidder in the room. Often the money you save will be used to repair the shoddy work of the contractor. It's best to find a designer who can create functional, beautiful living spaces that truly last for many years and are worth every penny that you spent.
