Choosing A Yonkers Preschool For Your Child

By Marissa Velazquez

Although preschool is not legally required the way that elementary and secondary education are, lots of research has shown that children who attend preschool have academic and social advantages over those who do not attend. Choosing a school for your toddler can be a daunting decision. Here are some things to explore and keep in mind when trying to decide on a Yonkers preschool.

For one thing, it is necessary to find a school with a license and a reliable reputation. Keep in mind that there is a difference between daycare and preschool. While daycare may provide safety and supervision, it does not often contribute to the child's academic development. Also, some day care centers operate primarily for profit, and safety is not optimal. In a licensed preschool, the environment is more likely to be both safe and educational.

Location is another important factor. When exploring your options, make sure you compare where they are in relation to your house. Plan out transportation options, and make sure that the commute fits with your schedule. You need to choose a school where you can drop off and pick up your child on time.

The safety and effectiveness of a school have everything to do with the people who work there. Be sure that you have met and spoken with the staff of the places you are considering. It is best of they are trained in early childhood development, but at the very least they should be friendly and responsible people.

Just like the location of a school is important, the hours are also important. Check the times when the school day begins and ends. You will need to choose a school that is compatible with your schedule. If you are not able to drop off and pick up your child when they day begins and ends, make sure that someone else in your family is able to do so.

The schools curriculum and it's approach to child care and learning is the most important factor. There are a lot of variations when it comes to early childhood education, but almost everyone agrees that children learn best by playing and doing. Make sure the school you choose allows for this kind of hands-on learning. In addition to storytime and coloring, the school should allow for painting, playing with blocks, sculpting with clay, and other tactile activities.

The physical environment is very important as well. In fact, looking around the room or rooms where they school day takes place will tell you a lot about the curriculum and the philosophy of the school. Pay attention to the way the rooms are organized and the types of toys and learning tools that are present. Also, this should go without saying, but make sure to keep safety in mind. Check to make sure that the children are supervised and safe throughout the day.

It's a good idea to make a list of the criteria you want to keep in mind for choosing your Yonkers preschool. Ask some other parents in your are how they have made their own decisions. Be sure to look at as many different options as possible before you make your final choice. Remember, your child's experiences at this age are among the most important ones that he or she will ever have.
