Things to Know about Unblocking a Drain

By Sharron Job

One of the most common plumbing problems in the kitchen is a plugged drain. A common kitchen plunger is an inexpensive tool to own and is simple to use in those situations. Pressing the rubber piece up and down with the handle provides suction and pressure that moves the blockage so water drains.

Since water splashes so easily, safety glasses should be put on to prevent soapy water from getting into your eyes. A water level of about 4 inches provides a good amount of force as the plunger is pushed downwards.Bring the water up to that level if it is less. The blockage clears and moves from the pipes with the driving force of plunging water. Running hot water for a few minutes after the blockage clears helps clean residue which may congeal once more.

Reduce the build up of grease and oil in the drain by wiping grease from pans with a paper towel before washing. Those fats and oils clog to the sides of the pipes which causes other things washed down the drain to accumulate and cause blockage. A plumbing snake is more useful for unblocking severely plugged drains than a plunger. The snake is a flexible auger that breaks up the clumps to allow the water to get through. Its snaking power is effective for clearing some of the slugs that interfere with draining.

Another hint is to remove the trap that is located under the sink and give it a thorough cleaning. It is a good idea to cover the slate impression floor in front of the sink. A protective cover eliminates a great deal of the cleanup required after repair of a plumbing problem.

Many times the barricade is too strong for a kitchen snake or plunger to break through. That is when the homeowner makes an emergency call to the plumber for assistance. With a reach of 200 feet, the plumber's snake handles many problems. This machine operated power snake is very powerful. It takes strength and skill to control the snake and feed it into the drain properly. This method is better left to a professional, as it can cause injury when not operated correctly.

Things liked packed lines are quick to clean out when the plumber uses this forceful equipment to tear into the blockage.Shifting of the ground or intense pressure causes clay pipes to break, which allows roots to enter.Roots and tangles are eliminated quickly by those using this commercial grade snake.

High pressure cleaners are excellent methods used by plumbers for clearing larger blocked pipes. A high pressure jet of water is sent into the sewer or storm water line. Roots of trees are cut by jet sprays of water designed for the job. Additional matter interfering with drainage is broken up and carried away. After the blockage is cleared, another forceful stream of water is sent through the line to flush out remaining residue. Some plumbing problems can be temporarily fixed with a plunger until qualified plumbers can evaluate the cause.
