Modest Weekend Home Improvement Projects

By Oliver Westworth

Staying at home with nothing to do is one of the most boring things. However, if you have some time off from work, you may use it to make some worthy changes in your house. Below is a list of some weekend home improvement projects that you can perform and kill the boredom. It is advisable to plan so that you have all the tools and materials ready.

You can fix beaded boards in your kitchen and bathroom. This will enhance the appearance of these rooms by giving them a traditional touch. Ensure that you cut holes for phone jacks and outlets in the wood or sheets.to get a modern design, it is recommended that you use a wider paneling plank.

Add storage to your entry. If you have a traditional closet or you do not like the built-in shelving system that you currently have, then you can try a different look. Refashioning the furniture can give it a look that is stylish, yet storage-savvy. You may put a small-scale table beside the front door and a wall-mount shelf above it for hanging keys within easy reach.

You may also improve your own yard. You can give your flowers some attention by removing weeds and pruning the plants. Personally create a patio for your outdoors using flagstones. Add a few potted plants to beautify the place and form a simple seating area. Use a mixture of colorful and intriguing chairs to create an eye-catching backyard.

Do some painting. If your paint has faded, you can give your surfaces a new appeal by adding paint or pacing wallpaper. Just get some self-adhesive to place the paper firmly on a primed area. A bit of your creativity can also help you come up with some nice designs.

Patch holes in your walls. Concealing wall blemishes is definitely a weekend-worthy project. If you are equipped with a surfacing compound and a putty knife, you may repair any imperfections, including nail marks. If the dent is too wide, you will need to spread an adhesive patch over the area and smear an all-purpose drywall compound using a trowel. You can then paint the place once it dries up.

Replace an appliance. A refrigerator bought before 1993 or a dishwasher purchased before 1994 definitely needs replacing. This is because the federal energy-efficiency guidelines had not come to effect for these products. Newer models consume less power and will save you on electricity bills as they can use up to 40 percent less energy than the earlier products.

Unclog the drain. If your drainage pipe is blocked, then this should be among your top weekend home improvement projects. In severe conditions, you may need special pumping equipment. However, your ordinary pipes and pump should suffice.
