Discussion On Important Things To Consider To Win The Fight Of Keeping Gout Out Of Health Issues

By Calum MacLeod

This is a form of arthritis that is marked by a sudden sharp joint pain. The condition could involve any joint though mostly it begins with the big toes or around the feet. The joints that are involved become swollen and painful, the skin around turns shiny and red. An attack can last 10 days if not treated. In addition to joint pain, there could be an ulcer or lump formation under the skin. Kidneys can also be damaged if involved. An understanding of this disease is important for keeping gout out or in finding gout cures.

The disease occurs when there is too much uric acid crystals in the blood. The making of this acid by the body is a normal process after eating certain foods. Usually most of it is eliminated by being passed out in urine. The condition will occur when the levels accumulate in the bloodstream.

When the levels are high in blood, uric acid forms crystals. These crystals are sharp and have the shape of a needle. These are the ones responsible for the pain and swelling that occurs in cases of an attack. They damage the natural pad found in bones that make joints smooth. Under the skin, the crystal causes lumps While in the kidneys they cause kidney stones or even worse totally damage them.

The causes of this disease are several. The condition could be inherited if one or both parents had the disease. Kidney problems could also cause the condition because the body is not able to eliminate the crystals it is producing. Eating a lot of meat especially red meat can easily precipitate the disease because of the high protein content in them. Excessive use of alcohol and some medications such as diuretics have also been know to cause problems.

For a home remedy, aim at maintaining a low body weight since being overweight increases uric acid levels. Research has also shown that a cup of cherries for gout taken daily lowers risk of attacks. Both rapid weight loss and overeating can contribute to an attack so taking frequent but small amounts of food can markedly cause relief.

Drinking plenty of water and avoiding drinks high in sugar which can increase weight are good for relief. There are also two major drugs that can help reduce attacks. These include Allopurinol and probenecid, they directly lower uric acid levels in blood.

The definite remedies are not yet known, currently management of the symptoms is most common. The drugs will only help reduce the symptoms of the disease. Three major drugs have been proved effective in this cause, they include non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, colchicine and steroids. If we are to succeed in keeping gout out of reach therefore, we need to adhere to these things.
