An Island Paradise Awaits in Hokitika

By Margery Pick

If you love to get away to the beach, but don't like to be surrounded by tourists everywhere you go, then Hokitika would be an excellent choice for you. It is located in the breathtakingly beautiful west coast of New Zealand, on the south island. You can soak up the sun's rays in relative privacy and enjoy the beauty of the mountains and rainforest as a backdrop. Even though the area isn't swarming with tourists, you will be pleasantly surprised at all the activities to keep you occupied and entertained.

Plus, you have a lot of options when it comes to your hokitika accommodation selection. Select from a plush beachfront motel, a primitive campground, or anything in between. A good choice is to rent a rustic cabin right on the beach so all you have to do steps outside your door and sink your toes into the sand.

When you want to get away from it all, Hokitika is a good choice. Forget the rush and stress of daily life and relax amid nature's lush bounty. You'll also have the opportunity to taste great new foods, explore interesting shops, and engage in water activities of all kinds. If you enjoy fishing, get prepared for some of the best fishing to be found on the west coast of New Zealand. Do you prefer water sports, boating, or swimming? If you can do it in the sun or on the water, you will find your favorite pastime on the beaches of Hokitika.

There is more to Hokitika than the beach though, you can hike through beautiful rainforests and bush country. The area is on an island on the western edge of the Alps. Its unique geography allows the area to grow lush vegetation, rainforests, and wetlands. Expect a lot of rainfall during the summer months and days that are hot and humid. The winters are fairly mild and fewer vacationers visit during that time, so if you really love your privacy, winter is an ideal time to visit. The view then is spectacular with snow visible on the mountains in the background.

The waters of Hokitika are crystal clear and there are limestone canyons and awe-inspiring gorges that create ideal fishing holes or hideaways to spend a secluded day. With a population of only 4500 people, Hokitika has a small town feel to it. At the peak of the tourist season, the number swells to 35,000, but that is still much better than the tourist hordes at some other beach destinations. The busy time coincides with the Wildfoods Festival which is held every year in March and attracts visitors from all around the globe.

You can stand on Main Street and see Mount Cook on a clear day, and contemplate all the beauty nature provided this one small island. Selecting the best accommodation hokitika offers may take some planning. Do you want to be pampered and have every need catered to, or do you want to rough it with the sounds and smells of nature? While the area isn't considered a tourist trap, it is a favorite travel destination among people in the know. If you are looking for a beautiful place in nature to unwind and enjoy the sand and surf, you won't have to look any further.
