The Core Skills Of Emotional Intelligence Leadership Development

By Martha Robinson

What makes leaders usually stand out from other people is that they have really high emotional intelligence, or otherwise known as EQ. If one wants to become a leader, then he has to make sure that he steadily develops his EQ as this will entail having a couple of skills that are important to take on the task. For those who want to develop EQ in order to become a leader, here are aspects of emotional intelligence leadership development have to be honed.

In order for one to become a leader, he must first become self aware, meaning he must know himself inside out. Of course, people will only follow leaders who have a stable personality and can take control of any situation no matter what the outcome. In order to be in complete control of any situation, a good leader has to be in control of himself first and must know how to assess himself constantly from a third person point of view.

A leader who is self aware will also have the ability to self reflect or self regulate. This, on the other hand, is the ability to constantly evolve and try to improve on shortcomings that one may have that can hamper his growth in anyway. Not many people are able to see their own character flaws and make logical amendments for improvement. If one has this skill, then he will continuously grow without any hindrance.

A good leader with a high EQ also has a high level of empathy. Empathy meaning he is able to put his shoes in the shoes of other people. This is extremely important when dealing with a team because oftentimes, one has to know what the people in his team are thinking in order to know how to motivate them and drive them to work their best for your cause.

Of course, social skills are a very crucial part of being a leader as well because one will be dealing with people everyday. Also, he will be dealing with people of different characteristics. As a leader, one has to be very flexible in dealing with people so that he will know how to lead the team with the partners.

Decision making is hardly driven by IQ but more so by EQ, especially decisions that need to be made in a snap. A person with a high EQ, knows the wisdom of weighing all the options before making a decision for the team. An exceptional leader knows how to weigh the considerations even in a minute when the situation of a snap decision arrives even.

The last skill that one has to have is conflict management. Conflict management is a part of social skills but it is often the harder part of dealing with people. Of course, one will need empathy, and decision making skills to manage conflicts.

In order for one to become a leader, he must have a high EQ to boot. Of course, these skills can definitely be acquired. Fortunately, there are many seminars that help with the development of EQ, especially leadership seminars.
