Physical Methods Used In Slope Stabilization

By Maria McDonald

There are a lot of challenges that come along when you have purchased a piece of land that is on a slant. If you are not careful you may end up failing to do anything constructive with it. There is need to look out for any possible damages that might be happening on it once it rains. From this, you can access the best suitable technique to improve the slope stabilization of the region.

Terracing. This is whereby your piece of firm converted into structures that resemble steps. These structures are fixed in a horizontal direction. In case it rains then the running soil is trapped on the terraces. It also helps a lot in creating a flat area that can comfortably be used for cultivation. This method has an advantage in that the soil fertility of the place might be improved through prevented soil erosion and it also helps in the conservation of water.

Another method that you can use depending on the type of your grade is diversions. In this case, the erection is done on a gradient across it. Many small channels of soil are created and all of them are directed into the main point that is usually at the end of the hill. The turnout result is that any type of runoff that may occur in the process is interrupted.

One can also make use of retaining walls especially when the foot of the slope has been destroyed. They are majorly used to prevent water running off from a building. They can still be used to prevent any water that may try to erode some soil on the top hill. This helps a lot in ensuring that your region remains firmly erected.

Another stuff that can be used is dropped erections. It is usually placed in intervals in a channel in order to ensure that a very steep gradient is changed into many gentle slopes. This helps water to flow out safely from one point to another one without having to dig out some gullies. Flooding is also controlled through this way and thus any component of runoff water can easily be trapped.

It is very important to make use of grassed waterways where possible. They must be made according to the correct dimensions. This is a pathway that runs from the top of the cliff. It is then planted with a suitable vegetation that helps a lot in slowing down the movement of water from the hill. This in return ends up making the slope to be very stable.

Conservation ponds are also used in helping to maintain the stability of a hill. They are constructed on the angles. Once it rains the little runoff water can be collected on the pond. This helps a lot in preventing floods that would have occurred in case it was not there. Therefore, have the right expert advice.

Access your region to decide on the type of control measure to use. If it is a Sabo dam then you should be very careful when constructing the opening. The opening should be very small in order to prevent any fast running collections that may come along with water. It should allow the chaff to enter slowly into it.
