Am I A Hoarder With OCD?

By Maria Wright

If someone hoards a lot of things without being able to let go of them, it could mean that he or she is way too lazy to clean up the place or has a problem. There are actually a lot of people with hoarding problems that suffer from some sort of OCD. When one suffers from an OCD, that person will find letting go of things very hard and will have the urge to keep on buying new things. If one constantly asks himself the question am I a hoarder, then take a look at these signs.

The first thing that one will have to check is whether he or she can let go of even worthless stuff or not. There are some people who can let go of worthless things but choose not to while there are those who really cannot and will find whatever excuse to keep them. If one is always finding excuses to keep useless things, it is possible one has a hoarding OCD.

If one would just take a step and look at his or her house, he or she will be able to know if he or she has a problem or not. Once he or she sees that his or her house has a lot of piled of stuff like furniture, carton boxes and a lot of weird collectibles, it could be a sign. It also confirms the sign if he or she doesn't have much room to move around.

Another indication would be if one does not mind throwing out stuff that does not belong to him or her. People who have this sort of OCD are not very particular when it comes to the stuff of other people the same way they are with their own things. Check out for this sort of behavior to know.

For those who seem to notice a strange growth of molds or mildew in their homes because of things that have been there for ages, that is a sign. It is not just a sign, but a very unhealthy and hazardous sign. In fact, some people who exhibit the behavior might even have mushrooms growing underneath the stuff they own.

People who have this sort of disorder also tend to be very defensive when confronted or scolded about it too. For those who happen to feel more irritable when being confronted about the whole hoarding habit, then they might actually be a compulsive hoarder. If one notices that he or she exhibits this behavior, then it is time to take some action on it.

Of course, this irritable and defensive behavior would eventually lead to social isolation. If a person feels like he or she wants to be alone with his or her stuff most of the time, then it could be a tell tale sign of a hoarding OCD. He or she will especially notice this if his or her friends would point it out.

For those who are already noticing some signs such as these, then it might be high time to seek help. Fortunately, there are many ways to be able to treat this type of disorder with therapy being one of them. It is better to just nip it in the bud rather than let it be and slowly progress into something worse.
