Great Gifts For New Home Owners

By Mellissa Rummage

Your best friend and her husband just purchased their first house, or perhaps your niece, brother or other family member. You naturally want to share in this time of excitement and celebration, and at the same time, contribute in some way to make the move less stressful. What can you do?

Do the new homeowners have children? Chauffeuring the kids back and forth to school, sport's activities or other events would be one way to help out. If small children are involved, consider offering to babysit for a few hours, or take the kids to the park for a bit of fresh air and exercise. Another option would be to care for the family pet. Keep them at your residence for a few days for safety's sake.

Think about the family's food preferences. Are sweets high on their list of favorites? Consider baking several batches of cookies or cupcakes for their delight. If they are health conscious, fresh finger foods are a good option. Sliced carrots, celery and cherry tomatoes with a wonderful bowl of homemade hummus is always welcome. Offer to run to the grocers or pick up the laundry. A gift card to a local restaurant would be an excellent possibility.

However, it's not always possible to help out in a hands-on manner. Perhaps the family is several hundred miles away or your work schedule does not allow you to get physically involved in the move. Then what? Flowers, flowers, and flowers! The gift that is always loved! Consider a freshly cut bouquet of favorite flowers or a woody purple violet to sit primly on the windowsill. A beautiful green plant to fill a corner of the new home or to hang above the bathtub is another possibility.

What about sending a large gift basket, laden with tangy cheeses, summer sausage and crackers? Or consider a breakfast basket full of crunchy cookies, elegant teas and sweet muffins? Add a box of chocolates for total decadence! Fresh fruit, tart pears, crunchy apples and ripe juicy grapes is another great way to express your pleasure over their new purchase. You can even pair this option with a floral bouquet or live plant. Some online florists offer both gift baskets as well as an array of beautiful flowers and plants.

Whatever you choose, your friends or family are sure to appreciate your thoughtfulness at this time. If possible, be available to assist in any way needed. If not, then sending a welcoming gift is always a great way to let them know that you are thinking of them.
