Tips For Selecting Dog Obedience Training Videos

By Garrett McMahan

Dog obedience training is the best way to ensure not only that your animal is safe and secure, but also that your pet does not exhibit irritating habits such as jumping on people, barking excessively or chewing up household items. All of this can be accomplished with proper training, and this training will foster an even deeper bond between dog and owner. However, not all programs are created alike so here are a few things to look for in a dog training system.

You need to find a program that will address a wide variety of issues, but steer away from programs that promise instant success or state that with one magic command, your dog will be completely trained. Training for anything requires patience, and it doesn't happen overnight, so you have be willing to spend several weeks reinforcing the techniques in the program and be willing to use the commands your dog learns forever. If a program sounds too good to be true, it probably won't work or simply won't help you correct a variety of issues.

One thing you often see in training videos is someone providing a treat for a dog that has completed a task successfully. Certainly a dog will be enthusiastic about earning a treat, but sometimes we don't have treats at the ready but still need the dog to obey a command. It's a good idea to opt for a treat-free training program instead and look for one that simply teaches a variety of commands. Your dog really just wants to please you and receive your praise, treats aren't a necessary part of training, and most dogs don't need the extra calories anyway.

Sometimes dog training programs include learning how to do a variety of tricks or even dog agility obstacles. Tricks and dog agility are great fun, but they are not essential skills. Your dog might know how to shake your hand or roll over, but if they bark all the time and tear up your books and shoes, then all the handshakes in the world won't make up for your frustration at their negative behavior. Select a program that focuses on the key skills that ensure your dog will be safe and free from nuisance behaviors such as jumping, chewing and barking.

There are programs out there that focus solely on teaching crucial obedience skills as well as helping you deal with common behavior issues, such as barking or chewing. The Dog's Way is one program that not only teaches these skills, but because it is a handy DVD dog training program, you can watch the DVDs and train at any time of day, which might better fit your busy schedule. You can learn how to teach your dog basic commands such as stay and sit, as well as how to properly walk on a leash. A dog also can be taught to stay quiet and not dash away from you. With proper reinforcement, these are skills your dog will be able to accomplish forever, which means you will truly be enjoying your dog all of the time. Keep in mind that a dog who is highly obedient is a dog that you can take to many places, keeping you together as much as possible.

Dog shelters all over the country are filled to capacity, and often animals are abandoned simply because they are not obedient. However, with some patience and work on the part of the owner, almost any dog can be taught to be obedient. Dogs that are well trained are often much happier and more content than untrained dogs because their owners are rarely exasperated with them and they simply know what to do to please their owners. Consider using a dog training DVD system such as The Dog's Way to make your relationship with your dog as happy and healthy as possible.
