Many schools in the states have aligned their curriculum to the standards of the Common Core or CC and have approved many Common Core books to be used. As the ones in the front line of this change, teachers must have all the necessary tools they will need to teach. The students will only succeed if the teachers can effectively utilize the materials for instruction.
It has been developed for more than a year and was built upon the foundation of the past established college and career readiness standards. They were developed by many organizations and individuals to replace the various uncoordinated ones currently defined by the states. Currently, there are 45 states that are implementing this program in their school.
Still, they have been allowed to add 15 percent of the syllabus to fill out any gaps. The programme addresses various subjects such as literacy in social and historical studies, ELA or English language arts, science, technical subjects and math. It is based on fact finding and research and aligned with the expectations for college and career.
It program is made to be rigorous and internationally benchmarked. If it is adopted nationwide, all states and their districts will be following the same guidelines. This will enable any child to transition smoothly from one school to another without losing any ground or repeating a lot of materials.
When the state adopts this program, they will have extra points upon application and they can compete for grant competitions. The main objective of this is to accomplish all the end results expected from the students in the given year. An example would be the ELA Standard wherein they will provide an appendix of possible texts to use that is grade appropriate instead of giving out a list of required reading materials.
Yet, high school juniors and seniors are required to study the Preamble, Declaration of Independence, one Shakespearean play, Bill of Rights and the Second Inaugural Address of Lincoln. The standards has many expectations on this program such as expecting those in sixth grade to be able to compare and contrast texts. Eleventh graders should be able to show knowledge on the important works that are the foundation of the American literature.
In writing, those in fifth grade must be capable of writing opinions that are well supported with other references. Eight graders should also be capable of writing arguments that have basis and relevant evidence. When they graduate from K12, they should know how to express complicated ideas, information and concepts in a clear manner.
Then higher years should be able to identify the aspects of a text that reveals the point of view or purpose of the author. They do this by providing an explanation, describing the procedure, discussing the experiment on the text, or defining the question the author seeks to address. In mathematics, they expect the first graders to solve word problem that calls for addition of three whole number whose sum is less than 20.
They also expect fifth graders to be able to solve fractions with different denominators and eight graders should know how to handle problems on irrational numbers. Developed by the experts, this provides the educator with guidelines that are flexible that they would follow.
