Finding Scholarships When It Is Financially Mandatory

By Keith Ryker

Not a great deal of things are as upsetting as needing to forge ahead and either not being able to or without knowing how. In this competitive world of industrial downturns where a school degree is more turning into the standard for acquiring a good job - or any job, for that matter - what's a lower income or wrestling family to do? In the opinion of the U.S. Department of Education, the average cost to attend college has increased more than 200 percent to nearly $20,000 during the past 30 years.

Despite generally held opinion, student loans can be avoided. When it comes to your education, there are more options out there notwithstanding your finance circumstances. You've just got to know whereabouts to look, and when I say, "your income matters," it's not such a terrible thing. Financial scholarships are available based mostly on need for virtually any career you wish to pursue.

The obvious place to look is your intended varsity to see what financial support and grant programs they have available, but state-based scholarships are also a great place to look.

Federal grants are also largely based on need and can supplement the funds received from grants. Grants and bursaries are sometimes supplied depending on your selected major, chosen college, or if you'll attend within your own state of residence. The web is a great spot to search and sign up for scholarships specific to your need and interest.

However , bursaries are not awarded completely based on monetary need, but other factors are usually considered, such as academic achievement, community service and performance in other out of class activities. Since each scholarship's necessities are dissimilar, you need to thoroughly review the scholarship factors to ensure you qualify.

What Are Some Need-Based University Bursaries?

Below are some general and state-specific, need-based scholarship awards you might find helpful:

The Unmet Need Grant - Available to scholars from lower income families, who are lacking between $1,000 and $3,800 to meet their financial help goals.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Grant - Available to high-achieving 7th graders, undergraduates and graduate scholars. Offers up to $30,000 yearly to transfer scholars from 2-year to 4-year varsities.

The USA Funds Access to Education Grant - Available to high school seniors from low-income families.

The Ernestine Matthews Trust Grant Award - Available to graduating seniors (and residents of Maryland) with better than average grades. Award continues for 4 years if candidate can maintain at least a "C" average.

The Korean American Scholarship Fund - Available to college-enrolled students of Korean heritage, in various regions around the US.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program - Available to high-achieving African-American high school seniors with demonstrated leadership capacity and monetary need.
