Basic Guide To Reading Programs For ADHD

By Kerri Turner

Reading programs for ADHD kids are more readily available than ever before. Now that this learning disability is getting more accurately diagnosed, there is a larger body of information about teaching these kids. Their perception of life has been described as living inside a video game with all the sights and sounds being thrown at you all the time.

Although it is a challenge to teach them, because they are hyperactive and easily distracted, these children can be extremely lovable and personable. It is well worth the extra effort required to teach them to learn to focus on a single page of print. If they also have temporary memory problems, they might also have a hard time following the plot of a story.

Although they are more challenging to teach than normal kids, no parent or teacher should give up on them. There is now more material available that is specially designed to meet their learning needs. One suggestion is only giving them books that are on their reading level. Another is giving them magazines to read which are shorter and easier to finish.

There is also a lot available in the way of computer software that can make learning to read easy for these children. Computer software that offers visual and tactile interaction is ideal. One such program is Starfall, which is available for free online and gives children an opportunity to explore alphabet letters and sounds, phonics games and simple readers. The pictures come alive, games make learning fun and all the classroom content is presented in a way that keeps kids interested and attentive.

Interactive storybooks with lovable cartoon characters are also available as software. These basically consist of online word games where children can choose the way a story goes by changing a word, or adding a missing sound. Since they are kept simple and short, online storybooks keep children's interest in learning to read.

One program that has long standing popularity is the Reader Rabbit series. As an educational software series, it features animated cartoon figures who go through fun adventures that captivate early learners. Children learn to recognize sight words and sound out phonics via a platform of lively stories and games that allows them to progress at their pace.

A program called Accelerator consists of a 4 CD set and uses lively activities to teach key concepts such as letter sounds, phonics and vowel sounds. Children follow a sequential program that takes them through advancing skill sets until they can master writing skills and creative thinking.

A software program called Language Tune-Up helps review and build on already learned word skills. It features a placement test and after taking the test, children automatically start at their appropriate lesson level. Since it is phonics-based, it works best for children ages six and above. Starting at a preschool reading level, it moves progressively as far as fourth grade.

There are now many and varied reading programs for ADHD kids available. Educators and publishers have come up with educational materials especially geared to making it fun and easy to learn. Since these children are hyperactive and easily lose focus, computer software that is fast paced and interactive offers ideal learning opportunities.
