Learn How To Release Emotion

By Deborah Moore

Without expressing emotions with one another, people begin to experience psychological issues. Often, this can happen because of the way a person has been brought up or because of what they have been taught. It is unhealthy to repress these feelings. This is why one needs to learn how to release emotion in any form.

A lot of people become depressed, anxious, shameful or angry. However, they remember what their parents have told them. Parents tell children to stay strong. They tell boys not to cry and to be a big boy. This will have a negative impact on them as they grow up. They believe that men are not supposed to show their feelings.

When your father is distant and your mother shows you love in the form of materialism, it can be difficult to know how to show emotions. You can be overwhelmed and it is not easy to know where to start. It can interfere with the way in which you relate to other people. You will struggle with relationships. It may also interfere with your work performance.

However, this is not enough. You still need to know how to express your feelings. You can't go and pick up a paint brush every time you feel yourself becoming upset and remembering that you are not allowed to feel this way. Eventually, when you do go to therapy, you discover it is not only the psychological issues that you get rid of, but also the physical pain.

If something traumatic happens as a child, it can be too difficult to talk about it. This is understandable. A child like this will turn to other forms of entertainment which will distract them and they will block out the trauma in their lives. But it will be in their subconscious. They won't forget about this. It will still be there as they grow up.

Of course, this can be a long process during therapy. It will obviously depend on the underlying issue. Some people struggle with something such as abuse. They may be suffering from PTSD. They may have been suffering from recent triggers which have led to flashbacks. There is obviously a lot to deal with.

A person like this will struggle to express themselves because it is not something that they are used to doing. However, there are many ways of doing this. A therapist may feel the best way forward is to be more practical. This can include role play or art therapy. Other therapists will encourage the patient to talk without pushing them.

Of course, therapy can be challenging. However, one also has to ask themselves whether they want to get to the next level where they are able to go through life learning to love themselves and others. Therapy can be hard work and when you make the effort, you will find that it can be extremely helpful, especially when you have a good relationship with the therapist.
