Self-Determination And Adventures In Collective Empowerment

By Kevin Parker

Self-determination is one of the most important tools an individual has in life. For, it is the motivating force behind finding the strength to accomplish and succeed at a number of tasks. Whereas, adventures in collective empowerment can often help individuals and groups work towards creating an equal and more peaceful world in the future.

One of the best and most practical approaches to intervention in social work is through teaching empowerment to addicts and survivors. Whereas, it is often seen as a tool which can help individuals grow, learn and develop more easily. In addition, it can also be a great tool when learning how to engage with others or promoting civic engagement.

One of the most well known definitions suggest it is an ongoing process in which individuals whom are centered intentionally motivate others to get involved in local events through caring, critical reflection and group participation. Whereas, the term can also refer to the process in which groups are enabled to access authority, influence and collective power to have the strength necessary to deal with individuals, large institutions and society at large.

In no way is empowering someone giving the individual power. For, power already exist within the wealth of knowledge each individual. Rather, it is the letting the power out into the world while teaching people to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to overcome obstacles and reach goals. After which, most often these individuals become stronger and better able to handle a number of different tasks whether at home, school or work.

Also being defined as being part of the process of obtaining opportunities for marginalized individuals, groups and minorities, it has the power to promote good in a number of different areas. As a result, individuals working towards equality and unity are actively using empowerment to empower others to make a change towards acceptance and tolerance from one of bigotry, hatred and homophobia.

Collective empowerment is different from individual forms that it generally involves two or more people whom are working together for the common good. For example, groups such as LGBTQ+ pride committees who work all year, often on a volunteer basis to plan and promote a pride parade open to all in the LGBTQ+ community, family, friends and allies. After which, there are often new supporters whom wish to help promote equality whether in a city, state, country or around the globe.

Phrases such as empower women can often come across as sexist to some individuals. While this is the case, that is clearly not the intention. Rather, the intention is to create empowerment in women so that these individuals can then empower others. Whereas, all genders need to be empowered on a equal basis by people with a global perspective. For, then and only then, will the energies of acceptance, equality, tolerance and unity begin to spread around the world.

Empowering groups and individuals by using similar methods to create an empowered world in which all people are treated equally remains a worthy goal. At the same time, until individuals and groups can learn to communicate and compromise while acting out of a place of love rather than hate will collective empowerment be honored and appreciated.
