By Jocelyn Davidson

The bible refers to the holy book from which the believers of Jesus Christ draw their inspiration. This is a book that is said to have been written by writers that were inspired by God himself thus the Christians really rely on what they read in this holy book. They however need explanation of the bible scriptures for them to really understand what God wants them to do. In order to do this though, they need to understand the different genres of the different books in the holy book.

The sacred book is not simply a book; it is in fact a library made of 66 books. The books were written in a period of around 1500 years by various inspired authors. Though this book is stirred by the Holy Ghost, it also contains a mortal touch which makes the various books dissimilar. For example, James is not the same as Moses hence their type of writing is probably different.

The bible is about writings and hence it is has a lot of language. There are various genres varying from law, history, wisdom, gospel, poetry, prophecy and many others. The new and also the old tributes were written differently and in this editorial we try to describe some of these categories to make the comprehension easier.

One example of genres used in the law which basically talks about the will of God. Most law books are associated with Moses. He helped to teach his people about law and how they can establish a good relationship with their creator. There are approximately 619 laws that were issued by God through Moses in addition to the Ten Commandments that are being used by Christians up to date. The law books are represented by the first five of the Old Testament.

Another genre that may be seen mainly in the old books is the history. These are the scriptures that tell the believers the history of Jews beginning from the periods of the judges and the Persian Empires. Some of them comprise of judges, chronicles and kings. In acts in New Testament also has a small bit of history.

Wisdom literature was written to make people understand the meaning of life and practical living. This literature teaches people how to live according to the will of God. It teaches people to learn how to not live in their own will but that which is wanted by the lord. This literature warns people of evil and desires.

Poetry can be seen mainly in the Old Testament. It is similar to the present day kind of poetry. The problem however is that it was written in Hebrew thus it does not translate very well to English. Among the list of books that use poetry are songs of songs, lamentations and psalms. They use a lot of rhymes.

The other kind of genre is the gospel which can also be referred to as good news scriptures. This is a category that mainly speaks about the liberator and also giving courage to believers that he will descend back to life. They can be seen in the new writings and many have a little trace of other genres.
