By Eloise Hewitt

Before you can advance in your chosen occupation, some things must be made sure of. The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors has set out rules in order for you to obtain your required certificate. There is a checklist that needs to be read and understood before any examination may proceed. If you are successful you will receive a Notice of Approval letter sent to you from the Board.

Many people still get mixed up between the contractor and an electrician. The contractor is a business that employs people who specialise in construction work for example, the installation, and maintenance of an electric system. The electrician is an individual person with a trade certificate. They both have insurance and a license to safely protect employees and home owners from insurance liabilities. Electricians have an option of working for individuals or a contractor.

All contractors are classified into three types depending on the work that they perform. The first is the "Line" contractor, who works with high voltage power and distribution lines. They are there to maintain and build the system that transports electricity. This is generated at a power plant before being used in buildings and homes.

The "inside" contractor will help to provide voltage to any building within boundary lines. This could include substations and outdoor lighting. They are also qualified to work with installations and maintaining residential as well as commercial buildings.

If you are one of the successful scholars you will receive your results straight away. The Board will then be able to access your marks. If there are any questions the offices of the Board are open between 8:30 am to 5:00pm.

One of the most demanding aspects to this specific job is that you will need to work overtime. Working in noisy and dirty places is another rather unpleasant part as well as finding yourself in cramped places. On the positive side you will be working with your hands and have plenty of opportunities to do problem solving.

The special restricted exam consists of a single family detached dwelling, plumbing, and heating, elevator, groundwater pump, as well as electric sign. You will be able to choose your answers of 40 questions each. The time allocated for this one is 3 hours. The next one will be for fire alarm and low voltage. There are 50 questions of multiple choice and you have 3 hours to complete it.

A power plant is a special facility that generates electric power. In the middle is a rotating machine called the generator, this makes electric power. These stations usually burn coal, oil, or fossil fuels to make electricity.

Before registering for this examination one must first get authorization from the board. Once this is done the application form and the necessary fees and any other information that is required needs to be returned to them. If you are approved you will receive a letter stating this. Only one sitting for the exam is allowed, if you fail the whole process will need to be repeated.
