Helpful Hints For Those Who Are Moving

By Joyce McIntosh

If you will soon be moving out of your house or apartment, you might be feeling a tad overwhelmed by all that you have to accomplish before the move-out date. While moving is a chore, it doesn't have be horrible. Here is some helpful advice that will make your move flow much more easily.

It's hard to keep everything that you need to do fresh in your mind, so spend some creating a comprehensive checklist that is separate out into different categories, such as packing, address changes, utilities and so on. For utilities, list all of the utilities that need to be shut off and all of the utilities that will need to be turned on at the new home. This will include everything from water to cable to internet service. Don't forget about anything you often have delivered to your home, such as a newspaper, a medical prescription or water.

Forwarding your address is a big part of the process, as well. Temporarily, you can put in a forwarding order at the post office. However, you do need to contact anyone who sends you bills and ensure that addresses have changed. You also need to contact entities such as the department of motor vehicles, your doctors and your kids' schools. Be sure to get copies of your doctor and school records if you are moving far away. It might seem obvious, but you also need to give your employer your new address, as this shows up on certain paperwork.

Packing is perhaps the biggest overall chore that you will face when you move. Boxes and packing materials are expensive, so begin by looking for free boxes online and ask friends and family to save newspapers for you to use as packing supplies. It's also best to begin packing as soon as possible. Just start with items you rarely use, such as all your decorative items, books and clothes that aren't in season. This is also a good time to think about getting rid of some of your items. Anything you no longer need can be donated, sold or given away and then you don't have to move it.

While the post office will forward your mail for quite some time after your move, it is still important to contact anyone and everyone with who you correspond and let them know about your change of address. This includes credit card companies and anyone who sends you a bill, as well as changing addresses for magazine subscriptions and even catalogs. Be sure to tell your doctor that you have moved, and if you are moving out of the area, get your medical records so that you can give them to your new physician. The same advice holds true for your children's school. They need to update your address or provide you with information about how to have records sent to new schools.

Sometimes, your new place simply isn't ready to move into on the day you have to move out of your old home. In this case, it can be necessary to look for a self-storage facility in East Lansing, West Lansing or Bath. Finding a mini storage facility isn't difficult, but you need to find one that truly suits your needs. For example, some facilities require a long-term contract and you should instead consider a company that allows you to rent by the month or perhaps by the week. A well-secured facility will have plenty of lighting, be surrounded by high fence and have cameras mounted around the facility, so be sure to look for that. It is also very handy to have 24/7 access to your belongings, so find a self-storage company that allows that type of access.
