Tips To Being A Freelance Travel Writer

By Sarah Hughes

A lot of people have the ultimate goal or dream to go traveling to different places around the world but simply do not have the means to do so. One way to go traveling without having spend a bomb on it is to become a freelance travel writer so that one may actually combine business and pleasure. Of course, there are certain requirements if one wants to pursue this path.

The first thing that he has to do is to brush up on his writing skills. The best way to do this is to first get a writing job, in for example, a magazine or an ad agency and build credibility from there. If one wants to enter this field, then he is selling both his name and his skills both of which need to be enhanced.

After one has gained enough experience in the workforce, then he may choose to either offer writing services to clients or make his own site or blog. If he offers services to clients, then he may have his trips subsidised if the client agrees. If he goes on his own, then he has to fund his own trip.

A second option is to own a website or a blog of his own. Of course, with this kind of venture, one will need to finance his own trips. What most people do, aside from saving up some money, is to get an investor to invest in his trips and the equipment needed to cover the trips.

Now, the next thing that he has to do is to visit places. For this, he will need to decide on the traveling niche that he wants to take like he may choose to write about cultures, food, scenery, tourist attractions etc. Selecting a niche ensures that he will have a specialty so that if he wants clients or if he wants to go independent, his target market will benchmark his specialty already.

Of course, there is always the choice for one to simply become a writer by being good at researching about different places and writing about them. However, research can only get one so far as nothing beats writing about actual traveling experience. In travels, one should always remember to carry a travel journal since this is where he will be writing all his notes and interesting stuff for his work.

While traveling, one has to take notes in his trip diary. After his travels, he will pour out all his notes into his article which will be given to the client or put on his own blog. If he has a client, then the client will market his work but if he manages his own blog or magazine, he has to do the marketing.

Basically, these are some of the things that one has to do if he wants to get into this sort of field. Now, do take note that it doing this sort of thing is quite tiring because of the traveling involved but if one really enjoys this, then it should be no issue. It is like combining work and pleasure at the same time.
