Techniques Used For Kids With ADHD In The Classroom

By Kathleen Hill

Children who suffer with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will struggle in school. There is no doubt about that. This is one of the most common behavioral disorders among kids today. It is the reason why teachers need to know about ADHD in the classroom. There are various techniques and methods for teachers to introduce in the classroom for kids who struggle with the disorder.

Parents need to look for the most appropriate school for their kids where they will benefit most of all. They will essentially need to shop around for a school which has small classes. Here, kids will have more attention. They will have more attention which is obviously a requirement. They will also need teachers who have knowledge with the disorder and who are experienced.

Some kids will battle more with their attention span, while other kids will have a problem with their energy levels. Teachers need to be aware of each child and their requirements. Certain children will not be positioned away from the window, for example. This will prevent them from staring outside, losing concentration during class.

Class time needs to be shortened according to the needs of the child. This will depend on their attention span. The same goes for the length of the activities and assignments that they participate in. Over time, assignments can be lengthened, but this should also be monitored. Children need to be praised as they begin to focus for a longer period of time.

The goal should be to reinforce positive behavior. For example, younger children will often have behaviour issues. This can come in the form of temper tantrums. A teacher needs to know the right way in dealing with. When they are focusing on a project, they need to receive a lot of praise. Often, a teacher will spot that a child will have a gift, and this needs to be encouraged.

Homework should be assigned so that it is simple and less complicated. This can also be lengthened over time. When a child is progressing and doing well in class, they need to be encouraged, given praise for their good behavior. A teacher who discourages negative behavior in the wrong way will cause a setback for the child. This is something to keep in mind.

Having a routine is very important. This is what a lot of individuals suffer with. They struggle to know what to do first when they wake up in the morning. It can be overwhelming, and this is frustrating which will eventually lead to procrastination. It can upset the entire family. A child needs to learn about getting into this habit early on in their life.

Performance levels will also begin to increase when they are involved with tasks and assignments which are more interesting. There needs to be some variety in the tasks that are provided so that they don't become bored. Tasks provided should provide them with curiosity. This is especially relevant for the younger child who is always curious about the environment and their surroundings.
