Basics On ACT Prep Palm Beach

By Olive Pate

The ACT, or American College Testing, refers to an standardized assessment that is usually taken by high school students interested in continuing their education and attending college. This is essentially a college readiness exam that is administered in the United States by the ACT. It is considered as part of most college admissions, which is why many students strive to get a good score. ACT prep Palm Beach is an option for people in Palm Beach FL who want to score their best on the assessment.

November of 1959 was when the first test of this kind was administered by Everette Franklin Lindquist. It was a competitor to the Scholastic Aptitude Test by College Board, which is better known as the SAT. Originally, the ACT included just four tests: social studies, natural sciences, mathematics and english.

In the late half of the 1980s, social studies was renamed as reading. Natural science was also changed to science reasoning. Small changes have been made from time to time since the development of the test. In fact, an optional writing portion was added in 2005. In the spring of 2015, it was announced that the test was not computer based, although paper exams are still available in places where this change to computers cannot be applied just yet.

All colleges offering four years in America accept this test. Still, the emphasis or overall importance of the scores may vary based on the school. Some may consider other factors, such as extracurricular activities, class rank and GPA of potential students. All tests receive an individual score 1-36. There is a composite score which is the average of these four scores.

This exam is taken around the globe, although primarily in the United States and Canada. It can take more than three hours to compile, not include break times. The english portion takes 45 minutes, while math is allocated 60 minutes. Then there is reading and science portions that include 35 minutes. Thirty minutes is the time limit for the optional writing portion. Overall, the test is known be intense and can be stressful, which is why preparedness is key for those who want to be successful.

There are different ways preparations can be made. Practice tests, tutors and study guides are common choices. ACT also offers official prep tools. People may make use of the various in-print and online books and articles with information and tips. Sometimes working with a professional tutor is the most helpful.

The purpose of the test is to determine the general education and capability of high school students interested in college-level studies. The four exams are multiple choice and the optional writing part measure their ability at writing and planning a short essay. Essentially, the results of this test measure the readiness of a student to attend college.

It can be difficult to be successful when it comes to higher-level education and a lot of work is involved. While these tests may indicate the readiness of most students, it is not to say a person is incapable of succeeding on a higher level. Those who are dedicated to learning can do well. However, many colleges do consider this number when looking over college applications, especially at more expensive or prestigious schools that put a lot of weight on SAT and ACT scores.
