Preparing To Join Certified Nurse Anesthetist Programs

By Etta Bowen

The field of medicine has benefited a lot from invention of anesthesia. However, with it have also emerged complications or deaths resulting from wrong application. This has forced the government to put in measures such as establishment of certified nurse anesthetist programs as a means of ensuring that professionals administering these drugs have the right attitude and skills to minimize mishaps.

To gain admission into the anesthetic profession, one must have a bachelor degree in nursing or any other related field. The person must be a registered nurse with a minimum of one-year experience in acute care. In addition to these, he or she must sit a national certification examination after successfully completing a nurse anesthesia accreditation program.

Candidates have a wide number of training institutions to choose from. The admission requirements for each might be slightly different. However, the requirements of a relevant degree, experience and license remains the same across the board. Individuals who have worked in busy adult settings such as health centers are also better placed at transiting and coping up with the demands of the program. However, those who practice pediatrics and neonatal care are also acceptable.

Before being accepted, the candidate has to be subjected to rigorous interview. This is usually done by the program coordinator or a panel of professors and it may involve two or three stages. Some schools may provide you with clues on what the interviewer is going to touch on. Others however prefer to keep it a mystery for good reasons.

Their main goal however is to see whether an individual holds the right attitude towards this profession and life in general. People with good leadership skills are also required for it is they who are able to uphold the profession. Most of the questions in fact are not concerned with the technical aspects of the field. Rather, they are meant to assess if the person has chosen something that he or she is passionate about.

Rather, their main goal is to see if one is passionate enough in doing whatever task that is ahead of him or her. Interviewers also take seriously the writing skills of a person. Since they will be issuing and marking assignments throughout the program, they would not like to admit people who will slow down work. Earlier, institutions relied on essay scores in Graduate Record Examination. Today however, most issue their own during interviews.

However, most institutions have shifted to offering short essay assignments during the sessions. With the increasing number of people seeking to be admitted into the programs, administrators have been forced to raise the bar for entrants. Good course performances are an important consideration. However, people who have better curriculum vitae are more advantaged.

The demands for professionals in the field of anesthetics are growing daily. However there is need to ensure that whoever ventures in this field is able to provide the highest quality service. People wishing to pursue these programs should therefore prepare adequately. This ensures that they pass the interviews and are able to meet the challenges ahead of them. The candidates, once they are deployed in their workstations, they will be doing more than just handling patients.
