Terrorism Readiness And Emergency Packages

By Eric Holm

Before 9/11, America sponsored terrorism abroad but did not experience it at home. On that date everything changed. Aerial attacks on a major American city brought the reality of terrorism to Americans in their own country. Although a war against terrorism was declared immediately it was hastily moved offshore to other countries. However, the genie was out of the bottle and Americans can no longer sleep as easily as they did before terrorism made its appearance in their own country.

At the heart of terrorist tactics is shock. Innocent citizens cannot relax because they are the prey. Like animals living with predators, innocent people must constantly be ready for a shock attack. Alertness and flight are the survival modes of wild animals. Human beings need to develop some of those same qualities. Eyes and ears are the instruments of observation. People need to keep emergency kits as part of their constant vigilance..

All emergency kits, including terrorism preparedness and kits, should contain clean water and food that can last for at least three days and up to three or six months. Even if you get trapped inside your home, you and your family can at least survive for a considerable length of time while rescue is on its way. Aside from food and water, your terrorism emergency kits also need to protect you from the aftereffects of biological, chemical and even, nuclear attacks. You should not take any chances when it comes to your safety and that of your family.

In addition to food, water and water purification tablets terrorism preparedness should contain some protective clothing such as gloves and protective blankets that can protect against radiation. Gas masks should be included and all members of the family should have practice in fitting the masks and making sure that they can put them on quickly. Very simple things like bandages, scissors, anti-nausea tablets and painkillers should also be available.

Terrorist attacks aim at creating fear and shock in order to achieve their ends. They need effective communication methods, but communication is also essential for their victims. Torches, whistles and radios will be essential, but such implements can also help the terrorists locate victims in some situations. Perhaps the most important survival techniques, therefore, are contained in the heads of people who have some training in survival methods. It is possible to research a great deal of such information on the Internet where there are sites that will allow people who have a common code of survival for when an emergency occurs.
