Steps On How To Teach A Kid To Read

By Sharron Cantu

One of the most important lessons that children would have to learn would of course be reading simply because this is something that they would be doing their entire lives. Now if one is a first timer as a parent, he will probably find it hard to teach his kid because the child will have to start off from scratch which will take some time. So if one would need some help, then here is a short guide on how to teach a kid to read.

Now the first thing to do is to start small with easy reading books that would have a lot of pictures. Of course before going to a little more heavy reading, one would have to begin his children with some very easy books that would have extremely basic words with really big fonts. As the child progresses, then the parent may find books that are harder.

Now one would start his child with books when the kid has already learned to read the alphabet and sound out all individual letters. Of course the parent will slowly teach the kid how to combine few letters in order to form a word. Start off slowly so that the child can follow and then gradually increase the speed of reading.

When the first page is done, have the kid repeat it again so that he will not forget about it. Now in order to make it easier for the child, let him keep repeating the first sentence before he would go on to the next. Make sure that he keeps on reading it until he perfects the sentence.

Of course aside from sounding out the words, parents must explain the meaning of the words. So after reading the first page, one should explain what the first page is about and then ask him to do it again and of course explain the meaning. Try to define the meaning of the pages as simply as possible in a way that the kid will understand.

After the first page, then the next thing to do would be to have a question and answer session with the child. Anything that the child would want to ask, he may ask during this time like how to pronounce a certain word or what the word would mean. Once all of those questions are answered, then the child should repeat again and explain.

One very important thing to take note is that kids should read the words out loud so that they will be able to familiarize themselves with the sounds. Reading out loud is also known to be able to help people in general remember what they are reading. So in a general sense, they would be practicing their diction while they are increasing their memory.

Now when teaching kids, parents have to make sure that they do everything consistently otherwise the child will forget what he has learned. So parents have to sit their kids down in front of a book everyday so that they will make reading a habit. From there, they will be able to move on to harder books.
