Interior Design For The Contemporary Home

By Anita Hale

There are a few basic rules to bear in mind when trying to interior design the contemporary home. You don't want to create a dark cavernous environment overloaded with smoked glass and black leather. While these features are fine in moderation, the main rules are to keep it light, bright and edgy.

So let's talk about things like flooring. Ideally you want to ensure that the floors are wooden. You can use contemporary rugs as these give a greater feeling of space. In opening up the space you are letting in light and keeping with the feeling of clean lines that are integral to contemporary design.

You should consider using stainless steel as part of your interior design. Both brushed stainless steel and polished stainless steel can be used to great affect in creating a modern feel to your house. Stainless steel is great to use in lighting accessories. Lamps and overhead lights are just two examples of where you can use stainless steel.

When you need to furnish your room don't be tempted to go for masses of dark fabric. Textured materials such as leather can give a great contemporary feel. However, you should consider using these in lighter and neutral tones. The main aim is to keep the space light and airy. Ironically, a lot of modern design actually uses vintage furniture. For instance, it is becoming increasingly popular to buy chairs inspired by the sixties and seventies. Designer chairs made by the likes of Terence Conran will set you back several hundred pounds. However it is also possible to buy reclaimed and mock vintage furniture for less.

If your room needs a table there are many available made from glass and stainless steel that will help maintain a contemporary feel. However, if you have children you will find that these tables will quickly get covered in sticky fingerprints. This means that you will most likely spend the majority of your time polishing it. There are a number of alternative types of table worth trying. If you want to continue along the retro theme then why not try a table made from Formica or finished with vinyl?

In conclusion, let's focus on how the walls should be decorated. Your best bet is to hang some modern art on the walls. These can act as focal points and be a great way to introduce colour into your room. It is key that you do not group together pieces that fight with each other. If the print or painting you have is large then make sure you hang it on its own wall. Having another picture too close to it will draw the eye away and create an imbalance. It is also essential that you never hang pictures in direct sunlight as this will fade them. But it is important that there is a good light source near your art to ensure it is easily seen.
