During Goal Setting Workshops NM Companies Can Empower Their Teams

By Andrew Reed

The business environment is a hostile one. Competition is fierce, global markets are opening up and consumers are becoming more demanding. Only those companies that can remain on the cutting edge can hope to flourish. This requires a high degree of focus. In turn, no company can focus if it does not have very specific goals that it works toward. In goal setting workshops NM companies learn how to focus their efforts towards greater success.

Many people still think that a goal is some kind of intention to achieve something. They would think that a statement such as I must lose some weight constitutes a goal. It is most definitely not an objective. Objectives, or goals, need to be very specific and they must comply with certain criteria. Poor goals inevitably lead to poor productivity and a waste of valuable resources.

The first and most important characteristic of a good objective is that it must contain an action verb. This means that the verb must be observable. A verb such as grasp, for example, is not an action verb because one cannot observe how someone grasps something. The action verb must also be measurable. One must be able to observe just how well this action is performed.

It is all good and well if an objective contains an action verb that can be measured. If the objective is to lose weight, then one can argue that the act of losing weight can indeed be observed and measured. But this will mean that the person will achieve the goal even if he loses just one gram. Gaols must therefore contain standards too. The objective should therefore rather be to lose at least seven pounds of weight.

Realistic objectives must also set a time limit. It is no use pursuing an objective that is open ended. That will allow teams to work on projects for long time periods without the need to produce at least some results. By such and such a date should therefore be part of the wording of every objective. One cannot plan if there is no time schedule.

If one knows exactly what it is that must be achieved, to which standards it must be achieved and by what target date this must be done, then one has the ability to formulate a proper action plan. Each smaller step that must be achieved on the route to the achievement of the bigger objective must be listed. The achievement of these steps must also be observable and measurable.

There are many individuals and companies that offer seminars and courses on how to set goals. When planning such a workshop it is important to obtain valid references and to check them out. The presenter should be familiar with the vision of the company because that will enable him to teach delegates to set goals that will contribute towards that vision.

When one does not know where one is going any road will take one there. This old adage is only too true. Businesses cannot grow and profit if they cannot set and achieve very specific goals. Teaching teams how to to set goals and how to plan for their achievement is therefore an important priority to many top companies.
