Without Proofreading You Do Not Know If Everything Makes Sense

By Peter Hughes

Any person who makes their living writing articles, web copy, eBooks or anything that must educate, explain or illustrate anything to someone, must be able to do it convincingly. That is done, of course, by knowing the material or subject matter and being able to get it down, in an understandable way. Part of that is due to the editing and proofreading that occurs, and must occur, in order to make it look professional to those who read it.

Editing means that everything must hold up and fulfill the promise of the title. All of the facts must be checked and any math used, as an example, should be verified. The entire written piece should hold up and be the fulfillment of the promise that your title gave to the reader. The content must be coherent and editing that first draft will help accomplish this.

When the activity, known to some as proofing, is undertaken it is simply concerned with the mechanical construction of the content. Editing deals with what is said and proofing is concerned with how it is said. Punctuation is looked at as are all commas, colons, semicolons and other devices are verified as being used properly.

The editing that is done is crucial as you wish to sound and write with authority. The proofing process is absolutely necessary because you wish to sound like you know what you are saying is accurate. There is no way that you should try to get anyone to believe what you say unless you are, or have someone else, doing both of these things.

Commas are devices that are overused in most cases and from most writers, at least in the first draft of many articles. The use of the word however can become tiring if not checked, after the fact, and corrected and this is what proofing does. Many writers will often capitalize improperly and this can be caught when proofing the document.

The grammar rules that govern all civilized written material are not always followed to the letter by writers. This is not to call them lazy, but, occasionally, unaware what they are doing in this area. Many of them use an outside proofing service that takes care of these things for them and takes that first draft and transforms it into something of which to be proud.

If you are involved in the writing industry or are simply writing an article or web copy to promote a product or service, whether your own or as an affiliate, you may need the services of one of these experts. They are easily found, online, and can save you time and embarrassment. They will not cost as much as you may think and will help you gain more attention than a badly executed piece would.

You want everything you write, whether for yourself or a client, to be perceived as a professionally executed. If you are unable to follow the correct rules, find someone who can and hire them for this task. Your professionalism will be enhanced and your earnings will continue to grow.
