The Best Fantasy Books This Year

By Gregory Murphy

The media, marketers and authors sometimes hype titles for selfish reasons. They are eager to drive sales other than offer the truth. The person best positioned to give a list of the best fantasy books is one who knows what the lovers of this genre want. It takes years of perusing through such books to identify a good read from crap. Here is the actual list of titles that will never disappoint you.

George Martin R does not need introduction in this genre and his series A Game of Thrones attests to his stature. It is already a hit and is making waves beyond books. He is considered the master of weaving stories that are apparently isolated but merge at the perfect moment. He is brutal with his heroes making it risky to label anyone as a loser or winner before you are done with the last sentence.

The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece by Rothfuss Patrick. It narrates a tale of a legend that overshadows that of a woman and a young boy. Their paths cross in a way that changes their lives forever. The boy is out to challenge destiny. One aspect Patrick has mastered is precision and a perfect placement of every action and word. This is one novel that will be worth every minute.

The Blade Itself stars a reluctant hero, breathtaking action and black humor. It is a combination of ironies with a barbarian who is reluctant to kill, a dashing hero who fear is fighting and torturer with the most amazing heart. The plots are heavily twisted with the characters being unforgettable. It ranks high among the best titles you will ever encounter.

The man who takes the honors for The Axe and The Throne is M. Ireman D. He wrestles your mind from the first page and takes you to a new world that is impossible to leave. Every action in this novel is characterized by pain and darkness, yet the author injects relief through unexpected jubilation. With an unbelievable plot and most memorable characters, this is the best book you will every lay your hands on.

J. R. R Tolkien is a common name in the world of fantasies and has renewed his participation through the title Lord of the Ring. This is considered an epic of the century. His mastery of English language and its mythology, experience of WW I and creativity are all exemplified in this title. Though a movie has been made under the same title, you will feel as though you were conned at the theaters if you pick the book.

Grossman Lev has perfectly captured Post-modern fantasy in The Magicians. It does not feature repetitive cliches, repetitive characters or obvious plots. According to Lev, heroes are not all about winning. They face post-traumatic stress and have to deal with depression at times like everyone else.

There are other excellent routes into the world of fantasy including Lies of Locke Lamora written by Scott Lynch, Disc World by Terry Prachett and the work of Brandson Sanderson entitled The Way of Kings. While some titles are series, others remain as single titles. Some are already movies but their animation cannot match the feeling of flipping through pages.
