Major Problems With Public Education

By Ina Hunt

A lot has been researched on ways in which we can offer quality school life. Tackling problems with public education is an important step into molding well educated citizens. This can be achieved by identifying the problem and its root and then coming up with ways in which we can tackle it.

A recent study suggesting poverty to having been a historical obstacle in achieving education remains to be relevant as ever. In the past, education was given to the working class and those at poverty levels received almost none. Currently, everybody is getting educated regardless of the social background and all are expected to graduate. Compounding this shift with the increased poverty levels, it shows that it is a new paradigm shift which needs fresh policies in addressing the reality.

In the start of the millennium, students who qualified for reduced-prices or free meals made up of around half of the students in four states. Within a decade, more than half the students in 17 states that are in public schools are in poverty. In this century there has been a great increase in unemployment among parents and the available jobs fail to provide for education and basic needs.

Testing of scores has been crowded out in arts subjects such as music and drama which produce the unique skills of a student and also cultivating a love for learning. The schools in poverty levels have found math challenging and has frustrated teachers and put the student at a greater disadvantage relative to their peers. Standardization on the other hand has made it difficult to mold lessons to the unique social culture.

Sidelining of the physical educations and recess has in turn posed a challenge to the well-being of students. This is because these two enhance the student capacity to focus and learn while on the other hand ensuring that the health of the student is healthy as it combats calamities such obesity and other lifestyle diseases.

The disparity between schools in rich regions and those from deprived regions is very wide. Those from deprived areas have larger class sizes, non-motivated staff and obsolete teaching equipment among various vices. On the other hand, schools in affluent regions are equipped with good medical attention, modern learning models, libraries that are well stocked among others. This makes the public education to appear totally unequal.

Parental involvement and the quality of the home life of the child act a predictor of the achievement of the student. Some parent are very much involved with their kids lives while others are nowhere to be found and no nothing about their children whereabouts. The need to be actively involved is very wise since positive encouragement at home will lead to improved outcomes in learning at school.

Confronting conflict is among the process of child maturation though when a child gets exposed to violence and bullying, it may lead to poor performance in school and also development of anti-social behaviors including anxiety when the child grows. Educators need to incorporate violence reduction and conflict mediation in education of early childhood.

The system of education remains to be highly important in the country since it is in here that a country is able to mold future professionals. Safeguarding this institution by tackling the many glitches which are facing it is important for it to remain relevant.
