A Short Guide To Contemporary Interior Design

By Anita Hale

This article is going to examine a few basic rules about achieving a luxury interior design that is also modern. First of all, there is a misconception that modern interior design must be dark. This simply isn't true. You can certainly have dark furnishings or the odd touch of smoked glass. However, a contemporary home should have a light and airy feel to it.

Let's have a look at flooring within the home. You will find a lot of modern interiors use wooden floorboards or polished wood flooring. This kind of flooring can help make spaces feel more expansive. If you are worried about the flooring creating echoes in your house you can decorate them with modern rugs. These rugs will help to soak up some of the ambient noise.

Now let's talk about stainless steel. This can prove to be an invaluable material to the modern interior designer. It works very well when used in fixtures and fittings. However, you can also use stainless steel very effectively as a finish. For instance, A modern kitchen will really look the part if it has a stainless steel worktop.

Another myth about modern interiors is that all furniture must be leather. There's nothing wrong with having a leather couch. But you do not have to use a dark leather. Instead, a lighter colour or textured fabric in cream. Remember, we are trying to achieve a sense of light and space. Too much dark furniture will take away from this. Another great addition to your room could be a statement piece such as a vintage chair. It sounds ironic that vintage furniture can be used to achieve a modern look, but it is the truth. Designer chairs from the 1960 and 1970s are particularly popular now. You can try out such wacky creations as the egg model chair. You may be surprised by how much they add to the look of your room.

Let's have a look at the kinds of table that would suit a modern home. If you would like to continue the vintage theme then you can try a Norwegian wooden table. These tables have a very sleek design that looks great in modern homes. You can also consider Formica or vinyl table-tops. These kinds of table are heavily inspired by the fifties. Alternatively, there are many different styles of glass table available. Glass tables are great in modern homes because they help reflect light. However, they also show up fingerprints very easily. Therefore, glass tables are best avoided in homes with children.

The walls in a modern home should not be overly decorative. This means you should avoid heavily-patterned wallpaper. You should also try not to hang too many photographs in one place. You want to create a feeling of space. This means that simple neutral colours will work best on your walls. If you think that looks too plain then you can jazz them up with some contemporary artwork. Make sure the art you choose is the right size for the wall it must fill. And under no circumstances should you ever hang any artwork in direct sunlight. Doing this will cause extreme wear and tear over the years.
